MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TRAUTSCH
As we put the finishing touches on another successful school year, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for making the year go so smoothly. We are fortunate here at Grand Avenue to have a great staff, but we could never be as successful with your child if we didn’t have the support from all of you.
We want all of the students to have a relaxing summer, but keeping their reading and math skills sharp are an important way to avoid having their skills regress over the summer. The public library offers some reading programs and here is a link to some good math ideas. http://yano.co.uk/2012/05/dont-let-maths-muddle-you-2/
Just a reminder that our district registration will be on August 3rd and August 8th from 3:00 – 7:00 pm. Even though most of the registration can now be done online, it is still a great opportunity to come in and get your child’s picture taken and get any questions you may have answered.
Also, please mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 31st from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. That will be our Back to School Night/Supply Drop off event. This is a great opportunity for your child and you to bring in the school supplies, check out the classroom, and meet the teachers.
Finally, I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing all of you again in August, and as always, feel free to call the school in the meantime with any questions that you may have.

CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL
On April 14th, 14 lively fifth graders from Sauk Prairie Schools had the opportunity to participate in the Central Wisconsin TAG Creative Arts Festival. They enjoyed taking part in activities that ranged from making and playing their own Pan Flutes and drums to drawing monsters. Other activities included metal tooling, flower arranging, weaving, English paper piercing, wildlife silhouette painting, fashion design, and many other creative endeavors.
In addition, there was the excitement of getting to know students from the many other school districts who attended the festival, which included Wautoma, Amherst, Wisconsin Dells, Wild Rose, Baraboo, Adams-Friendship, Poynette, Portage, and Reedsburg.
Julie Breunig, Gifted and Talented Specialist for Sauk Prairie Schools, and Kathy Bruno chaperoned the students. Jenna McCann, teacher at MCCS, and Erin Fischer, art teacher in Sauk Prairie Schools, presented workshops for the students.

6TH GRADE IMMUNIZATIONS
Dear Parents,
The state requirement for 6th grade students is to have a Tdap booster (if they have not already received it). If your child has not yet received this, please make an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider to complete this prior to the start of the 2016-17 school year. If your child will be receiving the vaccination during the summer, please bring a copy of the updated records to the nurses table at school registration. If your child has an immunization waiver on file for personal, medical, or religious reasons that should also be updated. A student immunization waiver can be found on the school website under “health forms” or can be picked up from any school office. Please contact the Nurses’ office at 643-5509 (fax 608-643-5503) if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Pam Frey

GUIDANCE NEWS
Counselor Connection
In May, all grade levels will be engaged in classroom lessons which will help to prepare them for their future careers. The third graders will have the chance to learn about different career options. Students will begin discussing good choices and how our choices (substance use) can affect the type of career they may be able to pursue in the future. Then, they will explore their favorite interests, activities and subjects to learn how they relate to certain career paths. Students may be asking family members and friends about their career title and responsibilities.
The fourth graders will focus on self-knowledge as it pertains to future career choices. They will make an origami box all about themselves (“Me Box”) and share it with the class. Finally, we will discuss how our personality/feelings affect our success in school and in our future career.
The fifth graders will have the chance to review the qualities it takes to be an effective learner in school, whether primary, secondary or post-secondary. Students will have the opportunity to research a career they are interested in pursuing after high school. They will also be able to ask questions about transitioning to the middle school.
Another thought to consider in regard to future careers is what students share on social media sites. It is common for employers to use the Internet to research job candidates, so it is important that we teach children how to appropriately use social media sites.

Ponder Parenting
As the year comes to an end, educators reflect on how to help students become more successful the following school year. In the past few years we have noticed a decrease in students who are able to solve their own problems without the help of an adult. Since our job as educators and parents is to facilitate independence in each child, some ideas are listed below that may help students when faced with a problem in the future. These ideas are consistent with our promotion of respectfulness, responsibility and resourcefulness.
Help your child learn and practice manners in all areas, and the idea of common courtesy to everyone and everything.
Allow your child to make small decisions or choose between two choices you are willing to live with (i.e. Should we have Pizza Hut or Culvers for dinner tonight?)
Encourage independence and problem solving on their own, but be available for help, if needed. It also helpful to model these problem solving strategies.
1. Share
2. Take Turns
3. Rock-Paper-Scissors/Bubble Gum/Eany Meany, etc.
4. Compromise (each person gets a little of what they want)
5. Find something else to do
6. Take a Break/Think (calm down)
7. I-statement (I feel ____ when you _______ I would like you to ________)
School Breaks Food Assistance
Every year around the school break times (Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break), families from the Sauk Prairie School District have the opportunity to receive food items to help with the financial burden of needing to provide more meals during those break times. This opportunity is similar to the GSPIE snack packs, but includes items to make meals, not just snacks. The district social worker, Susan Baumann-Duren, receives food donations from the community to equally distribute to families in need throughout the district.
We try to fairly distribute these items so the same families don’t receive the assistance at every break time; however, some families do receive the food more than once during the school year. The food items are brought to Grand Avenue and can be picked up by the family, or sent home with the students (this option can be very difficult for the students).
If your family would be interested in receiving meal assistance at the upcoming break, please contact Sadie Sutter at 643-1954 or suttesa@saukpr.k12.wi.us by
Friday, May 27th.
