Winter Sports Update
Boys' Basketball (A)

Boys' Basketball (B)
The Boys B Basketball team had 9 games in their inaugural season. Although we won only a few games, it was very successful season. The boys improved their skills individually and as a team.
We would like to thank all the parents and fans for their support! I would like to thank the players for their commitment and effort throughout the season, which began early November. Good luck to all the 8th graders moving up and see the rest of you next season!
Keep you eyes/ears open for summer gym time to work on skills and 3 v 3.

Unified Basketball
For those unfamiliar, Unified Sports brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together during the game and beyond. Here at Merrimack Valley Middle School, we have seen firsthand the connection that our athletes and partners have made after our first Unified Soccer year. We look forward to the growth of our unified program and the positive connections it brings!

Engineering a Better Cookie
Mr. Ginty’s 6th grade Introduction to Engineering/STEM students are currently completing the "Cookie Cutter Challenge." This challenge requires students to design a winter-themed cookie cutter following specific design criteria. To complete this challenge, students research cookie cutters in general, and specifically learn how to make 3D printed cookie cutters. After generating a list of possible designs, students create a 3D virtual prototype of several cookie cutters in the Autodesk Inventor program (see pictures below).
After creating a series of cookie cutters in the Autodesk Inventor program, each student selects their best design to print utilizing our 3D printer.
A necessary (and in this case very enjoyable,) part of engineering is to test the functionality of a prototype. After each student has had the opportunity to 3D print their designs, we will roll out the dough and see just have good our cookie cutter prototypes work!
Innovation Lab
8th Grade Art Class
Eighth grade students have been working on black and white design with scratchboard and red clay inlay over a drape mold. Each project involves light and dark contrast. The clay project is very challenging for students because there are several steps to master to get a good bowl shape. Students also have the challenge of developing their design ideas by thinking about how the sculptural aspects of the project relate to the surface pattern (the outside shape, footing, lift, handles, rim design). This will be students third year working with clay, so they are building on skills we've been practicing and advancing each year. Here's a look at some of this year's eighth grade projects!
