Social Media Safety
An informational evening for parents & guardians.
Social media has become an integral part of our culture. It is a powerful medium for community organization, the democratization of information, building personal and organizational brands, and connecting family and friends. As with any public space or forum, social media platforms are subject to abuse, and education is the most effective way to protect against potential pitfalls. Please join us in this presentation from the Office of the Attorney General on best practices for safe engagement with social media. Topics will include:
- Current social media trends across all student demographics (by age);
- Popular social media, messaging, anonymous and teen dating apps: (e.g. Snapchat, Instagram, Spotafriend, Whisper, etc.) & some of the variables—dangers that can be presented;
- Internet crimes (PA Crimes Code) - cyberbullying, sexting, harassment, identity theft);
- The potential dangers unmoderated gaming chat rooms;
- Vault/ghost apps - what these apps can be used to hide, how to identify these apps and what these apps enable you to do that will not show on the cell phone bill;
- Child predator cases and the techniques predators use to groom potential victims;
- The importance of students building a positive social media profile (digital footprint);
- Empowering parents & educators;
- Establishing dialogue with and potentially securing your child's tech devices (parental controls, content filters, etc.);
- Digital permanence - what goes online remains online;
- Background checks and the importance of a positive digital footprint on college admission and potential employment.
