BEGINNING BAND MEETING
Beginning Band Informational Meeting - Monday April 16th @ 6pm, Middle School Cafeteria
For parents of current 4th graders who are interested in starting band in 5th grade and for all parents of older children who hope to start band for the first time as a 6th, 7th or 8th grade student next fall. The meeting will be about 30 minutes but is very important for a variety of reasons. Parents will sign up for an instrument trial appointment as part of this meeting. IMMUNIZATIONS FOR CURRENT 5TH GRADE STUDENTS
Tdap requirements for 6th grade students next year-2018-19
The Wisconsin Student Immunization law requires that all students entering the 6th grade receive a dose of Tdap vaccine. To be compliant with the school law, parents must provide their child's school with proof of immunization or claim a waiver.
1. What is Tdap?
Tdap is a vaccine that protects against Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis (whooping cough).
2. What grades are affected and what vaccine is required?
All students entering grades 6 through 12 must have one dose of Tdap.
SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS
GSPIE is excited to offer the School Supply Kits for sale again this year (with a new company that offers shipping to home as an option). The sale will run April 16-May 4. Watch for details for the on-line orders later this month.
LOST & FOUND
The pile of clothes stacking up from items that have been left outside during recess or forgotten in the lunchroom, outside the classroom, etc. is growing even larger. Please ask your child to stop by the lost and found table (across from the office) to check if they are missing any items. It really helps if we can keep this pile to a small mountain! Thanks for your help!
COUNSELOR CONNECTION
Throughout the school year, each grade level participates in lessons on personal safety (how to keep themselves safe) in many different situations. One situation we discuss briefly is abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and we would like to give caretakers some alternatives to lashing out at a child, so adults can stay above the line too. The following is a list of twelve alternatives from the National Child Abuse Prevention website:
Twelve Alternatives to Lashing Out at A Child
The next time everyday pressures build up to the point where you feel like lashing out -- STOP!
Try any of these simple alternatives. You'll feel better... and so will the child.
• Take a deep breath... and another. Then remember you are the adult
• Close your eyes and imagine you're hearing what your child is about to hear
• Press your lips together and count to 10... or better yet, to 20
• Put the child in a time-out chair (Rule: one minute for each year of age; i.e. 3 min. for 3 yrs old)
• Put yourself in a time-out chair (walk away) Think about why you are angry: is it the child, or is the child simply a convenient target for your anger?
• Phone a friend
• If someone can watch the child, go outside and take a walk
• Take a hot bath or splash cold water on your face
• Hug a pillow
• Turn on some music. Maybe even sing along
• Pick up a pencil and write down as many helpful words as you can think of
• Call for prevention information: 1-800-CHILDREN
If you think that a child you know might be being abused or neglected, please call your local human services department at (608)355-4200 and ask for a Child Welfare Access Worker. Together we can all help prevent child abuse and neglect.

Ponder Parenting
· In difficult times children may thrive on conflict. If you take the bait the battle rages. Instead step back, breathe deeply, relax, and stay at your center. Battles require two parties. One fighting alone soon tires. (Martin, William; The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: A New Interpretation, 1999)
E-mail Miss Sadie if you have thoughts or questions about how to accomplish this task.

On days when school is closed, those employees who work when students are in attendance (teachers, aides, etc.) will not be expected to report. Twelve-month employees and administrators will be expected to report as soon as possible.
If a school is closed for reasons other than weather, the day may not be made up. If this is the case, that would be included in the announcement of the closing and teachers would possibly be asked to report to another school for the day. Examples of this type of closing might be by the health official or because of lack of heat or light in the school.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
For example, if your child suffers from migraine headaches, we will NOT be able to distribute medication to him/her without an AMA on file. The AMA form can be found on the District web site. In order for medications to be distributed, pills must be in a prescription bottle with proper labeling. Students may carry inhalers with them, however, an AMA form must be on file in the office.
If you have any questions regarding medication distribution, please contact Laura Cody, RN for the district at 643-5509.
