After working with Mrs. Friend, students return with a sense of accomplishment and a smile!
Mrs. Friend subs for many teachers when they need to attend important meetings during school hours. What a treasure she is! Her great time management and eagerness to help results in accomplished lesson plans.
Mrs. Friend often helps our office staff to prepare for celebrations or special events within our school. Her helping hands make deadlines possible!
Have you ever heard the expression, "A friend in need is a friend indeed"? Allow us to tweak this well-known expression..."When students are in need, Mrs. Friend is there - indeed!" Green Tree Elementary is blessed to have Mrs. Friend working in our midst. Thank you, Kelly Friend, for the MANY ways you befriend students, parents, and staff!

GTE Spelling Bee 2018!
Green Tree Spelling Bee
On January 10th, Green Tree hosted our annual spelling bee to determine a champion for grades 4, 5, and 6. Students participated in classroom spelling bees in November and December to declare a representative and alternate for this event. Twelve students competed for the championship medal in 37 rounds of spelling.
The winners this year are Yashitha Deshangani – 1st Place, Bhagya Avula – 2nd Place, and Jade Wilson – 3rd Place. Mrs. Bagin was our Master of Ceremonies for the event. “It was a great opportunity for students who excel in spelling to shine on this date. The audience was very impressed as the spellers accurately spelled HISPANIOLA, SINEWY, and MERANGEY! These girls really did a wonderful job!” explained Mrs. Bagin.
Ms. Cindy Gravin, retired P.E. teacher from GTE, served as the pronouncer for our spelling bee. Judges were Mrs. Ann Muench and Mr. Doug Small. Mrs. Julie Campeau was the organizer for this event. Mrs. Muench said, “I cannot remember a spelling bee at GTE going for 37 rounds. All of the students who were recognized should be proud to be a part of such a stellar event. Congratulations to Yashitha, Bhagya, and Jade for earning the gold, silver, and bronze medals.”
Yashitha will travel to McKendree University in Illinois on March 10 to compete in the regional contest. We wish Yashitha much luck and safe travels as she represents Green Tree Elementary School.

Nurse's Note
Here are a few good practices to promote:
1) Get a flu shot (it’s not too late to get one today, but it does take about 2 weeks for vaccine antibodies to provide protection)
2) Wash hands and surfaces regularly (scrub hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and use disinfectant cleaner on surfaces as flu virus can live up to 8 hours on surfaces)
3) Stay home if you’re sick (individuals can spread the flu virus up to 5-7 days after becoming sick and should stay away from others until at least 24 hours after a fever subsides)
4) Cover nose and mouth when sneezing/coughing (flu virus can spread to others up to 6 feet away through coughing, sneezing and talking)
5) Talk with medical providers to receive antiviral medications (prescription antiviral drugs can help shorten the length of flu illness if received within 24/48 hours of getting sick
Snacks
This is just a friendly reminder to send your child with a healthy snack daily. Snacks are beneficial to children by promoting good nutrition and encouraging lifelong healthful habits. It also helps increase energy levels and the ability to focus throughout the day.
Lost and Found
If your child is missing any item(s), please visit the lost and found area located in the GTE cafeteria. Students are also allowed to check the Lost and Found area before school, during lunch and after school. It is highly recommended that your child's name be placed in all coats, jackets, sweaters, hats, lunch boxes and backpacks.
