PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Greetings Summit View INC Families,
What a difference that a month can make. Since our last newsletter publishing we have seen the great strength of our Summit View community and Waukesha community through the flood we endured. During the winter break the affected areas were restored with the efforts of many people brought in to help. January 2, 2019 we welcomed back students to dry classrooms with updates that only add to the already positive environments that our teachers create everyday. Thank you to each and every one of you who sent a positive thought our way- it was well received!
January is a great time to review, refresh, and even rewrite goals, both personal and academic. Whether it is just a New Years Resolution or a SMART Goal, practice setting a goal with your child(ren) this month and write it somewhere noticeable. Check in on this goal every few days. Present opportunities for your child to make progress towards this goal and be open to revising it as time goes on. Celebrate the downfalls and encourage the frustrating moments, most importantly, see it through and celebrate!
Looking ahead to the next few weeks, students and teachers are gearing up for goal setting in classrooms with winter assessments. While MAPS and PALS are a one day snapshot of where your student is at in their math and reading progressions, they are valued indicators when looking at the growth and goals of our school. We remain rooted in our vision that our school will change the way you think about education. Our students and staff share their excitement about integrating academic and design-based content in a creative arts approach. The standard district and state assessments that our students participate in are an opportunity to show that this vision is clear and long-term.
Speaking of our vision, we are at the mid-year point in the year and would love your insight! Please take a moment to participate in the Winter Parents & Guardians Perceptions Survey. This is the same survey that we sent out in the fall. By comparing the data we are hopeful to identify areas of strengths and opportunities! You can access this online here: https://waukesha.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9BGIM3Ezg8EN553 OR stop in the office to request a paper copy.
Finally, make sure to check out the details of our Annual Homemade Valentine’s Day Contest going on now. We cannot wait to display all the entries and create a neat gallery experience for students to enjoy in February!
Thank you for your continued partnership,
Garrett Sheskey

Eat A Rainbow Week
The 4th annual “Eat a Rainbow” week at Summit View is being planned for the week of March 11th-15th. Each day of the week, a new color of produce will be highlighted. Students will learn about the nutrients provided by different vegetables and fruits and how these nutrients benefit their bodies. Students will also have the opportunity to taste a different fruit or vegetable each day that week due to a generous donation by Good Harvest Market in Waukesha! Quite a few parent volunteers are required to make this fun and educational opportunity possible. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Nikki Rees atndutelle@hotmail.com or 262-613-0629.

Welcome Mrs. Stagl!
After seeing Mrs. Garcia off to new adventures before break, we are very happy to welcome Mrs. Rachel Stagl to the first grade community. Mrs. Stagl comes to us from the West-Allis West- Milwaukee School District. She has experience teaching kindergarten through second grade students and is inspired by our Summit View vision of Arts Integration. Stop by and say "Hi!"
If you are looking to leave a note for Mrs. Garcia, please feel free to drop off in the office and we will make sure it makes it's way to her.
A Note from our School Psych Student
Hello 5K – 5th Grade Summit View Families,
My name is Jacki Menzies and I am a second-year graduate student in the School Psychology Program at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater and working with Stephanie Koenigsman this school year, your school psychologist at Summit View. As part of a requirement for my graduate program, I am completing a specialist project which investigates an issue important in education. I am examining the relationship between mindful parenting and emotional and behavioral risk in children. You are being invited to participate, because you are a parent/guardian of at least one child in 5-year old kindergarten through fifth grade at Summit View Elementary. If possible, I would greatly appreciate it if you would please take 10-15 minutes out of your day to complete the 50-question survey online. The survey will be available until February 12, 2019 and participation is completely voluntary. I know your time is limited and I sincerely appreciate you responding to this survey.

What Makes a Healthy Lunch?
Thank you to those who attended our PTO meeting on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019 at 6:30. Mr. Sheskey shared the following notes:
- Lunch is 20 minutes with a 20 minute recess following (transition times are part of this)
- Students who need more time to eat after 20 minutes may stay in the lunch room and continue to eat on the bleachers or a nut-free table.
- Lunch counts serve no real purpose other than being a classroom routine. Summit View is one of the last elementary schools to still take a lunch count.
- The School District of Waukesha Food Service provider Aramark, uses a software program that tracks the popularity of specific food options over time and suggests a number for our kitchen staff to order. Kitchen staff will over order at times based on their observational data as needed. The start of the year is a challenge due to the growing students and growing appetites. At times a food option may run out and an alternative is made available.
- When students do not make a lunch choice at the start of the day, we are not sending them into the lunch room with an expectation, thus removing the disappointment when an option is not available.
- Alternative food options in these cases will follow Aramark's "Reimbursable Meal" (as seen in photo below).
Attendance Reminder- Safe Arrival
To report an absence, please use the School Messenger app or call 1-866-490-7371.
Students must remain home from school with a fever or if they have been vomiting. However, we have very caring/nurturing teachers that can support students with sniffles/coughs, etc.
Our school day ends at 3:40. Please avoid the 3:10-3:30 pick ups as our instruction time is very important to us Monday through Friday.
****Message from the Principal: It is very important that you are picking up your children promptly at 3:40 every day. Students are increasingly being “left behind” on a regular basis until as late as 4:15-4:30. The office closes at 4:00 pm so when this happens school personnel are unable to attend to the things they need to during that time (parent meetings, staff meetings, etc.) Please be mindful and prompt every day.
SCHOOL REGISTRATION FEES
If you have not paid your registration fee of $85.00 yet this year, please do so as soon as possible. Fees are well overdue and subject to collections. You are allowed to make installment payments monthly if needed. You can send cash or make your check payable to School District of Waukesha, and send it in an envelope marked “Registration fees” with your child’s name and student ID #. You may write one check for multiple children, just indicate how much for each child. You can also pay fees online in Infinite Campus, after logging in, the directions are the same as adding lunch money. Feel free to pay as little as $5.00 on a payment plan.
*Please remember Board Policy is that students risk walking at graduation when fees are unpaid.
FRIENDLY REMINDER- PARENT ACCESS TO BUILDING
For those parents picking up students early, late drop off, classroom volunteers, field trip helpers, and PTO visiting the school between 8:40-3:40, please use the front entrance (door #1) and check-in with your Drivers License the office personnel for a name badge. There are parking spaces available along the driveway (please avoid the front curb.)
