Need to know
We want your opinion about Selwyn House: Our school is looking for parents to participate in a completely anonymous survey. We invite you to give your feedback about the education, experience, and different features of the school. The survey will take just 12 to 15 minutes to complete. Your opinion is very valuable to us! Please take a few moments to click on the button below and respond to the survey.
Dismissal Times for Friday, December 17: Dismissal from the school (regular dismissal protocol) will take place as follows: Grade 3 at 11:15; Kindergarten and Grade 4 at 11:20; Grades 1 and 5 at 11:25; and Grades 2 at 11:30.
From Mrs. Funamoto’s Desk: I would like to thank you all for the support over the last 4 months. I wish you all a wonderful holiday! We will communicate with parents over the break if there are any changes in protocols and/or restrictions given the ever changing situation.
Face masks and Rapid Tests: They have arrived! We have sent home another box of child size masks and one box of 5 government-issued rapid tests.
Just in Case…: The teachers are preparing for remote learning in January. This is just Mrs. Funamoto’s gut feeling and by no means official. However, your boys could be coming home with materials that would take the boys through school-at-home if necessary. If they do not come home with extra materials, rest assured that the teachers have their plan ready to put into action.
Proof of Vaccination: If you have decided to vaccinate your son, we would appreciate it if you send in his proof of vaccination once he is considered adequately vaccinated (Ms. Manal manalm@selwyn.ca). This information would help us decide if we need to close a class, when we send siblings home (if their brother has symptoms),or in the event that the government imposes restrictions on extracurricular activities as in the Middle and Senior Schools.
SHS Important Dates 2021-22 ~ revised: Due to the successful Parent Student Teacher Interview format in November we have made changes to the timing of the January 27 and 28 PSTInterviews.
Parent Support for Upcoming School Events: In February, Selwyn will recognize Lunar New Year and Black History Month. Any parents who are interested in helping with this programming (e.g. decorating, suggesting speakers, workshops, etc.) are encouraged to contact Jennifer Torry (torryj@selwyn.ca).
Nike Pop-Up Shop #1 Update: Please note that most items will be delivered before Dec. 25, however, there are a couple of items that may be delayed: Lightweight Jacket 2XL; Hoodie size; Medium White; Hoodie size Medium Black. For any inquiries, please contact the distributor directly: pbuithieu@innovation-sports.com. Stay tuned for Pop-Up Shop #2 at the end of January.
Covid Corner
Your Daily Morning Covid Check Made Easier: Check out the COVID-19 Symptom Self-Assessment Tool from the Quebec Government’s website. This self-assessment tool is not intended to be a substitute for medical attention. Always follow the healthcare professional’s instructions. If you do need testing, this website is simple to use and gives you an appointment for COVID-19 screening.
Covid-19 Precautions and Protocols:
If someone in your household has tested positive for Covid-19, all SHS ES students in that household need to stay home and contact their Head of School (Mrs. Funamoto for Elementary School, cc: Ms. Manal).
If a student presents Covid-19 symptoms, please complete the online Covid symptom self-assessment to determine if testing is required.
If testing is required, please keep him and any SHS Elementary School siblings home until a negative result is received. Contact Ms. Manal with the results and to keep us informed.
If testing is not required, please keep him and any SHS Elementary School siblings home for the 24 hour observation or until symptoms cease. Contact Ms. Manal with the results and to keep us informed. Contact Ms. Manal to keep us informed.
If a student needs to be tested because he has symptoms, book an appt for COVID-19 screening.
Upon receiving the negative test results, if the student no longer has symptoms and has not had any fever for 24 hours, he may return to school. Contact Ms. Manal to keep us informed.
If in doubt, let us all err on the side of caution.
Rapid Test Result No Longer Accepted: Going forward rapid antigen tests (similar to GoRapide or MobileNurses) will no longer be accepted. After consultation with Dr Vinh, he recommends that students with symptoms need to be taken to get a PCR test. Based on the current community transmission rate in Montreal, a PCR test is the preferred mode of testing. We continue to confer with Dr. Vinh and will make changes as necessary.
In-school Rapid Testing: After consultation with Dr Vinh, he recommends that after any rapid test at school your child is picked up from school and taken to get a PCR test ( whether the results are inconclusive, negative or positive). Based on our logistics, where there is no dedicated space or personnel, there will be a trial period to determine if in-school testing is a viable option. The protocol will be as follows:
If your child presents with symptoms between the hours of 10am and 2pm, there may be someone available to run a test, if a test is recommended according to Quebec’s Self Assessment Tool.
Outside the hours of 10am and 2pm, parents will be called to pick up their child as per regular Covid protocols
If you have NOT sent in the Covid-19 Rapid Testing at School form or have not consented, you will be called to pick your child up as per regular Covid protocols
If you have sent in the Covid-19 Rapid Testing at School form, have consented and a test is recommended, we will call you for confirmation of consent (a confirmation email will be required before the test is run)
The test will be administered and once the results are available (around 30 minutes later) we will call with the results
Again, based on the recommendation of Dr. Vinh, the protocol is as follows:
if the result is inconclusive, your child must be picked up and taken for a PCR test
if the result is negative, your child must be picked up and taken for a PCR test
if the result is positive, your child must be picked up and taken for a PCR test AND the class will be sent home to await further instructions
Travel Reminders during Covid: Please note that no matter how short the travel outside Canada may be or the mode of transportation, unvaccinated children 12 years of age and under must follow the Canadian Government Travel Protocols, which states that while children 12 and under do not need to stay in full isolation they MUST NOT attend school for 14 days upon return to Canada. For more information please visit, COVID-19: For unvaccinated children under 12 without symptoms and travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians for information regarding travel outside of Canada. Please scroll down and pay special attention to the section titled “What your child cannot do for the next 14 days” for particulars on his return to school after travel.
