Working together with families in a partnership of teachers, staff and community members to provide an individualized learning environment that fosters high achievement in core and elective areas; preparing students for life-long success.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
This week was the official start of the 4th quarter.
Next week starts Alaska Measures of Progress (AMP) testing. Please referrer to the special AMP Smore that was sent on March 1st for dates and times for your student(s) scheduled grade level test session. If you have any questions please contact your Sponsor Teacher. All regular education test sessions will be held at the ASD Ed. Center.
It is a State regulation and District and FPCS expectation that all students participate in the state assessment. We encourage all students to take the AMP assessment, however should you determine that it is not in your students best interest to take the test, FPCS will honor your decision. We do request that you e-mail Principal Carroll: carroll_deanne@asdk12.org to let her know if your student will not be participating in AMP this year.
SCIENCE FAIR WRAP UP
This year’s Science Fair was a wonderful success. Close to 70 projects were on display and as many students interviewed. What an incredible range of topics we had: black holes, music and concentration, sound energy, mantis shrimp, tsunamis, electric motors, hydroelectric dams, global warming and many more awesome projects.
- Many thanks to the wonderful groups of people who helped make this year's Science Fair a wonderful success!
- Thank you to the team of JUDGES who interviewed nervous and enthusiastic students who all learned and grew tremendously by having the opportunity to talk about their projects .
- Thanks to all the families who provided yummy snacks for the Open House!
- A huge thank you to Carmen Bombarda and Jamie Ruble who came early and stayed all day to set up, assist students, help with judging, answer questions, and manage many details.
- Thank you to the teachers at Crosspoint who helped their students with projects.
- Last and most important: Thank you to all the parents who helped their students plan, implement and complete their projects!

ESSENTIAL INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
30 Second Speech
30-Second Speech works like this: Students have just been given new information or content (maybe from reading, a video clip, a lecturette, etc.) and you know they need time to make sense of this new content. You, as the teacher, pose a question to the class and ask them to "Plan a 30-Second Speech". Students can jot down thoughts or just quietly examine their thinking. Students are then paired -up (A/B partners; shoulder buddies; whatever grouping makes sense) and each person gives their 30-Second Speech to their partner.
The opportunity to orally process information and engage in social interaction is aligned with brain research that informs us that much learning occurs during social interaction.
