MEA Online Parent Lounge
Date: Thursday, December 10
Time: 5:00-6:00pm
Zoom: https://sandiegounified.zoom.us/j/82852426909
Thank you to everyone who responded to the poll for the MEA Online Parent Lounge! There wasn't a time frame that worked for everyone but we'll alternate between evenings and mornings to give everyone a chance to hopefully attend! Our first lounge is kicking off this Thursday, December 10 from 5-6pm!
Like the in-person parent lounge, you can come and go if/when/as you can make it. The idea is that it will provide an opportunity for parents to drop in, even if just for a bit, to say hi or catch up.
If you'd like to provide your input on the timing for the next parent lounge, the poll will stay open for families to chime in.
Hosted by MEA Foundation and Linda Ele
Winter Kahoot
Date: Friday, December 11th
Time: 4:00-5:00pm

END OF SEMESTER VS END OF MONTH 5
During most school years the end of the Month 5 attendance month coincides with the end of the first semester. Both of these dates are set at the district level and something that we as a school site cannot change. This year is an anomaly. Semester 1 ends on Jan. 22 while Month 5 ends on Jan. 29. We want to let everyone know now (well in advance) that all work for Semester 1 will be due the 3rd week of Month 5. Any work assigned to be completed during Week 4 of Month 5 will count towards Semester 2. Teachers will make this clear on their assignment sheets as well as in Google Classroom and/or Canvas.
PALS peer tutoring is back!
PALS, our student tutor program is starting soon! Elementary schoolers who are looking to be tutored, please fill out the form below. Middle and high schoolers who are looking to tutor, also fill out the form below. Thank you!
YEARBOOK
The 20-21 school year will be unlike any other. We will be talking about it for the rest of our lives. This year’s yearbook is going to be different too...because it will be crowdsourced and made by YOU!

Update to Ally Action
MEA is continuing our anti-bullying campaign this year! Due to concerns surrounding many of the ideals that ADL stood for, we are no longer associating ourselves with them, and we are officially Ally Action. We are starting the campaign by encouraging all students to sign this pledge to make our school a more welcoming place. Throughout the year, we will host events for all ages to build our school's community. If you're interested in joining our team, you can also tell us that on the pledge. Anyone in 6th-12th grade is more than welcome!!
ASB Events
ASB wants to know what times work best for you for school events! Please fill out this preferred times form to help us make our events work great for everyone.
Club Interest Surveys
Are you interested in being in a club, or starting one? MEA has a wide variety of clubs that will be continuing online! Fill out the first two links to start or join a club, and send the third to a teacher that you'd like to have run the club!
** COUNSELING CORNER **
Senior Appointments with Mr. Zappala
Seniors, please sign up for a time slot to talk with Mr. Zappala about your progress in completing the college application process as well as your FAFSA application.
Challenge to Class Requirements
Students must meet all class requirements prior to being enrolled in community college campus courses. Students can clear prerequisites by challenge exam, transcripts, or petition to challenge.
Challenge Exam offered through testing office: testing@sdccd.edu
If you’ve taken classes similar to the prerequisites in question but not exact equivalents, or if you have applicable work experience, you can petition through the particular Department. For this, download and submit this Petition to Challenge. The submit link is just below the forms.
CSU applications deadline extended to Dec. 15
Hello Seniors,
The deadline for Fall 2021applications has been extended for all CSU campuses until December 15th. If you still want to apply, you can do so now. Remember however, to not wait until December 15th to submit your applications. Doing this will most likely result in your not being able to submit your application due to the system being overloaded.
There is also a Virtual Front Desk available Monday-Friday from 11am-2pm to offer assistance.
If you have any questions about completing your CSU applications, please e-mail Ms. Thrasher directly at maria.thrasher@sdsu.edu
Spring Community College Dual Enrollment
11th and 12th grade students may take a community college course while enrolled at Mt. Everest Academy. There are many courses offered for dual credit, where students can meet high school graduation requirements while earning college credit. Now is the time to sign up for a Spring semester course!
All students, new and returning, need to submit a community college Supplemental Application each semester. Students can submit their Supplemental Application as of Oct. 26th and open enrollment will begin on December 14th.
Students new to the dual enrollment process will need to complete the CCApply and Registration Applications in addition to the Supplemental Application.
For any questions, please contact Mr. Zappala at rzappala@sandi.net
Community College Excused Withdrawals
As approved by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, community colleges will
still be accepting Excused Withdrawal (EW) petitions with a COVID reason. This
will be effective until 12/31/2020 unless the state Chancellor’s Office extends the
deadline.
However, this will not be an automatic process.
Students who are eligible should file a petition with this following form:
Petition for Excused Withdrawal due to COVID-10.
SAT 2020-21
For those of you thinking about taking the SAT this school year, here is everything you need to know. Although many colleges are not considering the SAT or ACT for admission for the Fall of 2021, some are test optional where the results can be considered for course placement. Reach out to Mr. Zappala with any questions you have about the SAT and ACT.

Invitation to Enspire by TESC @ UCSD
Enspire is a full-day event on January 23rd, 2021 designed to encourage students to pursue college-level education. This year, they will be inviting around 130 high school students to participate in several STEM activities virtually on Zoom that seek to be engaging as well as give a glimpse of the concepts taught in UC San Diego’s introductory engineering courses.
MEA Alumna seeks participants for research project
Sierra Ottilie-Kovelman (MEA alumna) is graduating this year from UCSD with a double major in Global Health and Psychology and is a research assistant in a child development lab at UC San Diego. When Sierra attended Mt. Everest Academy she enjoyed her classes on dissection, which led her in the direction of pursuing a health career. She was also inspired by her older brother, Danny Kovelman-Ottilie, who was an MEA valedictorian.
The UCSD child development lab is trying to learn more about child development and is looking for kids to interview in game-like tasks over Zoom. If your child is between the ages of 5 to 12 years and could participate in the study, here is the link for more information and to sign up.
Also, Sierra would be happy for families to contact her directly with additional questions at siottili@ucsd.edu
