Salem Spotlight
February 2020
Our Mission
At Salem, we realize all children are individuals, and this may be their first experience in social living. Our desired goal in working with all children is growth.
We strive to create a stimulating environment for each child that will promote and foster his/her interests and curiosity, thus promoting optimal learning. This learning will incorporate the development of academic, relationship, and citizenship skills, a requirement for functioning in our society as productive citizens.
Principal's Message
Dear Salem Township Elementary Families,
I want to thank EVERYONE who made our Boosterhon/Glow Run a success! Without the support of everyone in our LM Community we could not have have hit and exceeded our goal of $25,000. With this support we are able to provide technology and literature in our classrooms that support our genre exploration.
What is Issue 10?
Issue 10 is a substitute operating levy for the Little Miami Local School District and will appear on the March 17, 2020 ballot. This levy is a renewal of the expiring 2015 levy and would mean no new taxes for district residents. The proposed issue would convert the current five-year emergency levy to a substitute continuing emergency levy while maintaining the 12.5% tax reimbursement from the state to local property owners.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to our Administrative Team or the Superintendent's office.

Helpful Handbook Reminders
Cell Phone Policy
In an effort to decrease interruptions to instruction and maintain student confidentiality, students with cell phones (including watches with phones) must keep them in their backpacks during school hours.
Transportation Changes
Any change in pickup procedures requires a written note or email. Changes may not be made by phone. The office must receive changes by 2:00 P.M. Changes will not be made after 2:00 P.M.
Birthdays
Birthdays are very meaningful for young children and may be recognized by parents in a variety of ways at Little Miami. Some families choose to donate a book or learning materials (i.e. puzzle/game) in their child’s name to the
classroom, or a non-food item (stickers/pencil) for each student.
In our efforts to promote wellness and to be conscious of student food allergies, you may not send food or candy.
Please do not have balloons or flowers delivered to the school. These items may not be taken home on the bus.
Social invitations to non-school sanctioned events (birthday parties, pool parties, etc.) may not be distributed at school.

Counselor's Corner
Student Council
The Core Essentials trait for February was Creativity. The student council representatives led their classes in creating an acrostic poem to find ways to use creativity to improve classroom behavior and build positive friendships with classmates.
Test Anxiety Tips
MAP testing and AIR testing are coming up soon in 3rd and 4th grade, and sometimes this causes students to have anxiety related to testing. Help them prepare for test days by enforcing an early bedtime and providing a healthy breakfast on test days. Find ways to help your child relax and unwind after test days. This can include doing a physical activity or participating in calming activities, such as listening to music or enjoying a hobby.
Below is a list of strategies your child can use to manage stress and anxiety:
· Be active
· Eat right
· Avoid caffeine
· Get enough sleep each night
· Express your feelings
· Keep things organized
· Plan ahead
· Forgive your own mistakes
· Be yourself
· Feel good about what you have

Notes from the Nurses
by Mrs. Knochel & Mrs. Sedlatschek
The flu season is upon us! Remember that the main way illnesses like colds and flu are spread is from person to person in the respiratory droplets of coughs and sneezes. To stop the spread of germs take care to cover your mouth and nose by sneezing or coughing into your elbow, wash your hands often Please remember that the student must be fever free without medication 24 hours prior to returning to school. The student should also be free of vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Please help us in reducing the spread of illnesses.
A Note on Wheeled Shoes and Safety at School-
Please remember that these shoes are intended for recreational use and are not safe to be worn at school. Studies have shown that this type of footwear puts children at an increased risk of suffering injuries. Think of these wheeled shoes as skates rather than sneakers!
Following these guidelines will help to establish when it is appropriate to allow your child to wear their wheeled shoes:
✅ Always wear safety gear.
These shoes should only be worn when your child is able to wear the appropriate safety gear. These shoes should be thought of as skates, and so, protective gear such as helmets and padding should always be worn.
✅ Don’t wear wheeled shoes in or near traffic, on uneven surfaces, on the stairs, or in crowded areas, such as schools and malls. If the location is not appropriate for skates, it is not appropriate for wheeled shoes.
*Please help us to keep our students safe at school!!!
