"Did You Know?" Roosevelt Campus
October 2022 Newsletter
A word from the Principal
Roosevelt Campus Families,
October has been a very busy month! In addition to being engaged in their block and Advocacy classes, students also had the opportunity to take the PSAT and ASVAB assessments. We look forward to celebrating our October Students of the Month on October 31st for their efforts regarding academics, attendance, and citizenship. The end of the 1st marking period is on November 3rd. Please encourage your student to be in school daily, complete all assignments, and study for tests and quizzes so that they can finish the marking period strong! Although parent conferences will be held during the week of Thanksgiving, we would be happy to meet with you virtually or in person at your earliest convenience to discuss your student’s progress. We also hope you are able to join us for our Parent Faculty Club meeting on Monday, November 14 from 6 to 7 pm here at the Roosevelt Campus. Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s success.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
My name is Jodi Ervin and I am the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) coach at East Norriton Middle School and Roosevelt High School. I have been with the School Climate Transformation Grant (SCTG) since 2019 when the grant was awarded to Norristown Area School District. My goal in this role is to team up with the schools to achieve the best education environment and to support and coach students and staff the PBIS initiative of being safe, responsible, and respectful. Implementation of school wide PBIS will help the school climate change and hopefully see reduced inappropriate behaviors and an increase in positive behaviors.
I am a graduate of Immaculata University earning my master's degree in counseling psychology with an clinical trauma professional certification and an addictions certification. I utilized my degree working with adolescents and parents in Pottstown for 10 years providing counseling; focusing on cognitive behavioral therapy before coming to Norristown Area School District. I also spent additional time researching the impacts of COVID-19 and wrote an article for Montco Today to offer ways for families to help alleviate the stress of the pandemic and their children returning to school.

In the English II course, students are analyzing the plot in A Raisin in the Sun. We are currently halfway through the play with a focus on Aristotle's well-made play structure. Students are comparing the play's character traits to Langston Hughes' Harlem poem. They will conclude their investigation with an essay project comparing and contrasting the play to Dr. Martin Luther King's I have a dream speech in an analytical essay comparing and contrasting the drama to the historical speech. Students are also continuing to prepare for the Keystone exam and building on Academic vocabulary.
In the English IV course, students are analyzing American Like Me by America Ferrera. They are looking at culture, diversity, and identity from various points of view in a series of essays within the text. The writer's style and author's purpose with identification of the main idea, theme and moral, and figurative language are focal points in our class discussions. The culminating project will be to compare and contrast 2 of the essays of their choice through literary analysis and varying perspectives. We are also finishing up our exploration of Hispanic Heroes in celebration of Hispanic Heritage month.
