Message from Mr. Scheunemann
I hope you are enjoying the unpredictability of winter in Wisconsin. We get to experience warm and cold days, dry and snow/sleet/rain, and cloudy and sunny days all while living in the same place. I hope that in the midst of the unpredictable weather you and your child are able to find some consistency and care from us. As a building we work hard to be here for students and families even in the midst of the ups and downs of life, all while helping students learn and grow.
We are have quite a few important topics to cover in this newsletter. I appreciate you taking the time to look through this so you are informed.
- Attendance Change: Starting on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, families will be asked to report an absence through the LES/OSC Attendance Form. Families can complete this form instead of calling school or emailing the office; however, if you have questions or are unable to complete this form you can still call the school office. The form is also accessible through the Lodi Elementary School page and the Ouisconsing School of Collaboration page with a link that says “Report an Absence” on the main page.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences: Thursday, March 2nd and Tuesday, March 7th we will be having Parent-Teacher Conferences. Just a reminder that these conference are optional. Teachers would have reached out to you if they were requesting a conference and if you want a conference please reach out to your child's teacher. (More information is listed in this newsletter if you are interested in helping provide a meal for staff during parent-teacher conferences. Thank you for considering!)
- Placement: Here is the LES/OSC 2023-24 Placement Survey. Please fill out this survey if you want to share your perspectives about your child's class placement needs for next year. Feel free to respond only to the questions that are important to you. Please realize the information you share is advisory. Please submit this form by Monday, April 3rd. (Attention 5th Grade Families: feel free to reach out the myself or the Middle School if you have specific concerns regarding placement.)
- Forward Testing: LES/OSC students will be participating in the Forward Exam during the April 3rd - April 28th testing window. Your child’s teacher will be sending their exact exam schedule as we get closer. The Forward Exam tests students in the areas of Literacy and Math in 3rd and 5th grade and Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies in 4th grade. One or more subtests may be administered daily during the identified time frame and it is very important that your son or daughter be in school during this time. Students not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window. Here is the Wisconsin Forward Exam Information for Families 2022-2023 brochure which gives more information about the assessment including its purpose, what scores will be provided, and how the scores will be used.
Thank you families for ALL that you do for your child and the support you give staff and our school. It is truly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mr. Eric Scheunemann

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Vision Screens:
LES/OSC 3rd and 5th grade had vision screens on Tuesday, February 7th and Wednesday, February 8th. The students did very well. I have reached out to all the parent(s)/guardian(s) if their child did not pass the vision screen and a referral was emailed. If you have not heard from me then that means your child passed their vision screen.
Keeping Hydrated:
Please have your child bring a water bottle everyday for school.
Here are some facts to share with your child about the importance of drinking more water.
Every part of your body needs water. In fact, water makes up 60% of body weight.
Dehydration happens when there is not enough water in your body.
Mild dehydration can cause headaches, nausea and fatigue (tiredness).
If you are getting enough water you’ll rarely feel thirsty. Your urine will also be clear or slightly yellow. Dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration
Drinking water is one of the simplest things you can do to be healthier.
COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies Changes:
Changes to the COVID-19 procedure were approved by the board on Monday, February 13th. Below are the updates:
● The District should highly recommend and encourage testing for students and staff who
have COVID-19 symptoms (this moves from required to highly recommend and
encourage). The District should continue to accept home antigen tests and PCR tests.
● The District should highly recommend and encourage masking for all individuals who
test positive for COVID-19 through day 10 until they produce a negative antigen test
(move from required to highly recommend and encourage).
● Continue to allow positive COVID students and staff to return to school after they have
been fever free for 24 hours and symptoms are significantly improved (same requirement
as other illnesses).

Frostbite - Dress for Winter
With colder temperatures, we want to remind you the importance of children bringing all their winter gear to be able to play outside and have fun. Please make sure your children have their winter coat, gloves, hat, winter books, and snowpants. If skin is not covered appropriately then with colder temperature they can be at risk of frostbite. Frostbite is an injury caused by freezing of the skin and underlying tissues. In the earliest stage of frostbite, known as frostnip, there is no permanent damage to skin. Symptoms include cold skin and a prickling feeling, followed by numbness and inflamed or discolored skin. As frostbite worsens, skin may become hard or waxy-looking.You can treat frostnip by rewarming. All other frostbite requires medical attention because it can permanently damage skin, muscle, bone and other tissue.
Please help your child dress appropriately for changing weather. We've had some cold weather lately, so dressing in layers is helpful. Remember to label items with your child's name.

Music News
As you may have heard, the musicians of LES and OSC have been very busy learning the recorder. The beautiful sounds of “Hot Cross Buns” should be in the air! This is the unit where we are incorporating the reading of rhythms, note names, and coordinating fingers, tongue and breath - at the same time. It may be trying to hear at times, but it truly is the culmination of years of learning music concepts.
Upcoming events:
LES: Fine Arts Nite: Tuesday April 11th @ LES
OSC Musical “Together”: Friday May 5th, 7pm @ HS PAC
More information will follow.
Musically,
Mr. Aulds and Mrs. Weber
Message from Mr. Endres
During PE class in recent weeks students have been participating in a variety of new units such as Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, and Bowling!
It is so exciting to be teaching new skills to these students who are trying these activities for the first time!
Message from Ms. Good
In February:
- We have many students who are continuing the Polar Bear Book Club. To meet this challenge, the students have to read, or be read, 10 award-winning books (any award/honor is fine), record them on their sheet, sign it and have a parent sign it, and turn it in to the library. We have been posting their pictures, (with their permission) outside of the library.
- This year’s Caldecott winner (book award for illustrations) was announced on January 30th. It is Hot Dog, by Doug Salati, and we read it (or will, thanks to the snow days!) together in class. Ask your child if they can tell you what happens in the story and if they think it has good illustrations.
- We learned a little about Martin Luther King Jr. and that February is Black History Month.
- We talked about Dr. Seuss and the upcoming Read Across America Day, which is on Dr. Seuss’ (Theodor Seuss Geisel’s) birthday, March 2nd, and read a Dr. Seuss book.
- For Digital Citizenship, we discussed thinking about selfies and how what we post might affect us, and fifth grade has been learning about plagiarism and paraphrasing.
- We learned about a new online resource: Scholastic GO!, an online database and how to log into it.
Diary of a Pug, Ranger In Time, and The Last Kids on Earth are some titles that book talks were presented on.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions at goodamy@lodischoolswi.org.
Happy reading,
Ms. Good
