The Weekly Buzz
October 6, 2023
This Week 📚
Here's what we focused on this week.
Reading: This week in reading, our text set was all about exploring the natural world through insects. This text set included both fiction and nonfiction books. We discussed the difference between these two genres. Fiction books are made up and have characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution. Nonfiction books share true information or facts.
Writing: This week, we finished our memory stories. We focused on editing our work to make it our best. We edited our writing for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
Math: This week in math we continued working on solving two-step word problems. The students are doing a great job solving these problems!
Science: This week we started our first unit in science. We are learning all about habitats, plants, and animals. We learned about different types of habitats such as forests, deserts, prairies, oceans, ponds, and rivers. We also learned about plants and animals that live in these different habitats.
Next week, we will have our first science quiz on Tuesday. Students will bring home their chapter 1 packets the night before (Monday night). We completed the pages in these packets together at school. You can use these packets as a way to review the material at home before the quiz.

📌 Reminders
Nightly Homework
Each night your child should read for at least 10 minutes and practice math facts for at least 5 minutes. A great way to practice math facts is using XtraMath.
In second grade, we work on mastering our basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-18 so they become automatic. Practicing facts for a few minutes every night will help us reach this goal! If you need flashcards, here are some that you can print and use at home.
Dismissal
Remember to use the PikMyKid app/website for any dismissal changes. I will be checking this each afternoon as verification for how each child will go home. Please make all changes before 2:45 PM.
