PRAIRIE POST
October 21, 2016
Principal's Message
Where has the time gone? I feel as if it was only yesterday we were opening the doors for the 2016-2017 school year. We are off to a great start from naming our classrooms after various colleges, enhancing our college and career readiness focus, engaging lessons, personalized learning environments, a very successful Math Night, and Halloween Dance. What is next for Prairie? Only time will tell.
Parents/Guardians, I need your help. Beginning Monday, October 24th, Prairie scholars will only be allowed to eat healthy snacks during their snack time. We want to ensure that all our scholars are healthy and attentive in each of their learning environments. In order to assist with this, we need to monitor the snacks that they are eating throughout the day. Please support us in not packing chips, cookies, and candy for our scholars. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Prairie University Math Night
On Thursday, October 13th, Prairie held a successful math night for our families! Together, families played games around number sense and problem solving with fact fluency embedded. Our scholars left with a packet of games, cards and dice to continue the fun at home. We had a blast playing games with you while practicing our math skills! If you were unable to attend, but would like a packet of games with dice and cards, they will be available in the office for the next two weeks for you or your child to pick up. I would like to thank all the staff who made this night a success for our families. Thanks to the PTA in their support of refreshments, purchase of the cards and dice and contribution towards our Yoda shirts! May the facts be with you!!!
Conferences
Scholastic Book Fair will be held on both conference dates, and PTA is coordinating food trucks for dinner to assist with your evening schedule!

Picture Retake Day
Student Council Sock Drive
Did you know that each night 600,000 people are living on the streets in the U.S.? Our new Student Council wants to lead us all in helping those in need in our own community by providing as many small, but important, acts of kindness as we can in the form of SOCKS. Each pair of socks donated will remain in our community by going to help those served by either Hebron House or the Women's Center of Waukesha. A pair of socks may be something small to you, something you take for granted, but to a homeless person it can make a HUGE difference. Each of our classrooms has been provided with a collection box. We will continue to collect NEW socks now through Friday, November 4th. Please help our Student Council and our PAWSOME school community help our community at large!
Read to Achieve
Did you know that how much your child reads can greatly impact their current and future success? We’re working hard to make your child college and career-ready at school. You can help support your child at home by making sure she/he reads nightly.
Each month your child will be given a monthly reading log and it’s expected to be turned in at the beginning of the following month. Please record the minutes your child reads or is read to each day. If your child meets the monthly minute goal, she/he will receive a coupon for a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut through their Book-It program (October-March). Scholars will also be recognized and receive a reading certificate at our monthly school-wide assembly. At the assembly, children who meet their monthly goals will also get to choose a gently-used book to keep.
At the end of the school year, scholars who meet their monthly goal each month will win a gold medal. Silver medals will be given to those who meet their goal seven out of the eight months and bronze medals for scholars who meet their goal six of the eight months.
Thank you in advance for helping your child Read to Achieve and C.L.I.M.B. the mountain of success!
