Lovejoy ISD Dyslexia Highlights
March 2023
Thank you for your partnership in supporting your child's success!
TAKE FLIGHT HOMEWORK HELP
Dyslexia Therapy homework is designed to reinforce the new learning for the day in a small amount of time. Your assistance in assuring that your child completes the assigned work is greatly appreciated.
HANDWRITING - CURSIVE
Cursive handwriting is a skill that often makes written expression easier for students with dyslexia. The flow and connectedness help with spacing and legibility. It also reduces reversals. Please help your student assume good posture and pencil grip, and practice forming the letters correctly.
RAP - REPEATED ACCURATE PRACTICE
The purpose of this practice page is to support automaticity. It relates directly to the sound/symbol introduced during the day's lesson and helps the brain recognize the orthographic pattern. Listen to your child read the page, and provide feedback if mistakes are made.
INSTANT WORDS
Instant words are those words that appear with high frequency in written text. Instant recognition of these words has a direct impact on reading fluency. Please listen to your child read these words. They should be able to read them easily by the end of the week. If an error is made, please correct it. Save these pages and use them to review the words periodically.
ORAL READING LOG
Listen to your child for 15 minutes daily. You may also read to your child, or let them listen to books on tape. This is an opportunity to provide encouragement and feedback to your child's oral reading, model good reading, increase vocabulary development, and promote a love of reading in your child. If the classroom teacher requires reading minutes, those can be counted here as well!
Time Tip: Take Flight Homework should only take 10 minutes for lesson reinforcement plus 15 minutes for oral reading.

Texas Dyslexia Handbook
Did you know the state of Texas has the strongest laws supporting the screening, identification, and provision of services for students with dyslexia? The Texas Dyslexia Handbook has provided comprehensive guidance for families and school districts since 1985.
On September 3rd, 2021, the State Board of Education (SBOE) gave final approval for updates to the Dyslexia Handbook. These updates have required school districts to make policy, procedure, and practice changes. The updated Dyslexia Handbook went into effect on February 10th, 2022.
