Principal's Letter
Dear West TV Families,
The season of celebrations and giving is near and we are fortunate that students and parents/guardians hold our teachers and staff in such high regard. This alone is a significant acknowledgement and sign of respect. At times, parents may wish to give a gift to a classroom teacher or other staff members. Doing so puts our staff in a difficult ethical situation.
District employees are subject to Oregon ethics laws that govern the receipt by employees of gifts that may not exceed $50.00 from any individual giver on an annual basis. Employees must be aware of any gifts they are offered or received from any source.
Parents/guardians should refrain from giving gift cards or other items of significant value to our staff. Instead, we encourage you to write a note of thanks to the classroom teacher or staff member. We appreciate your understanding and as always, your ongoing support. Thank you.
On that note, all of us here at West TV would like to thank our most wonderful PTC for providing and taking care of the staff during conference time. Your generosity has been so amazing and we continue to relish in all the support and warmth from you all.
Sincerely,
Kalay McNamee

Reflective
All of our grade levels have just finished their first PYP units of inquiry of the year, so the teachers and students are spending some time reflecting on what was learned, how to share that learning, and the action their inquiry has inspired. For example, in third grade, students learned what it means to be a citizen, not only of their classroom, city, and country, but also of the world. As global citizens, they saw the need to take responsibility for others, working for children's rights around the world, which took the form of collecting for UNICEF on Halloween. This is an example of student reflection in action.
Family Movie Night
All student and their families are invited to come on Friday, November 17th for Family Movie Night. The featured movie is SMURFS. Doors open at 6:30pm and the movie begins between 6:45-7pm in the gym. The cost is $2.00 per person and refreshments will be a dollar. Proceeds will benefit the West TV Giving Tree. (Support for families in need this winter season.)

Daylight Savings Safety
On Sunday, November 5, we set our clocks back an hour, making it darker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians need to be extra alert to see each other in low light situations. Improving visibility means improving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflective clothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can to do keep themselves safe.
Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walking and biking:
• Wear bright, reflective clothing, and shoes when walking or biking.
• Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossing the street.
• Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
• Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop.
• Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popular walking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks.
When more people walk, bike, and take the bus it makes the route to school safer, less congested and more fun for everyone. Thank you for continuing to walk, bike, and use the bus. It’s the way to go!
