Engineering Technology
Students are learning how to drive Sphero Bolts in Engineering Technology in preparation for the BattleBot Royale. They used manufacturing techniques and the design process to design and build their armor for battle, which will be placed on their Sphero. After the battle, they will reflect on their armor design and how it could be improved.
From the Nurse
We continue to see cases of Influenza in our school population. Please read the following information on what to do if your student is diagnosed with Influenza.
Attendance
When reporting your student absent due to illness please leave a brief description of symptoms such as stomach issues, headache, fever, strep, flu. It helps to track illnesses in our building and reporting to health department if needed.
It is district policy to keep your student home until symptom free/fever free for 24 hours without medication. It will help to prevent the spread of illness.
What if a doctor diagnoses your child with the flu? Current recommendations from the JOCO Health Department, KDHE, & USD 232 are exclusion from school for diagnosed influenza for 5 days following the onset of symptoms (from the day when symptoms began…not the day the doctor gave the diagnosis) or until fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medications, whichever is longer. (example: if fever last 7 days student needs to stay home 7 day plus 24 hours after fever has resolved-time excluded 8 days, weekends count as part of exclusion; example 2 if symptoms begin on Saturday and fever ends on Monday student can return in 5 days on Thursday).
To aid countywide influenza tracking, please give details about your student’s illness. If your student has flu-like symptoms or has been diagnosed with flu, please be prepared to provide:
• Date symptoms started (and date of diagnosis if different)
• Date of flu shot, if received
• Type of flu (Influenza A, Influenza B, Influenza AB or type unknown)
• If student was hospitalized
To help control the spread of illness in our school please follow these illness guidelines:
- Fever-Keep student home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication
- Vomiting, Diarrhea, GI upset-keep home until symptom free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
Best prevention is good handwashing.
Most people don’t lather hands long enough. Lather hands for at least 20 seconds( hum Happy Birthday Song Twice)
Please contact your school nurse with questions or concerns.

From the Counselors
The Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be a great resource but not always in an emergency! Counselors periodically check the online chat and have seen as many as 81 people in line ahead of us (lowest 18). When calling you are first greeted with an automated message and then placed in a waiting line to speak to a counselor.
If kids are worried about the immediate safety of themselves or someone else we have encouraged them to:
- Contact an adult immediately (in person or voice to voice-not text or email)
- Call 911 – Our School Resource Officer, Dusty Wilson, shared information with students on what questions they may be asked if calling on behalf of themselves or someone else
- Call the Johnson County Mental Health 24/7 crisis line: 913-268-0156. The crisis line connects to someone in the area for suicide assessment and can send a mobile crisis team to any location.
The app MY3 is designed for mental health safety situations. Kids can enter 3 emergency contacts and create a step by step safety plan. They can also call 911 within the app. Calm Harm is another app that provides distraction and breathing activities if they begin to have the urge to self-harm.
We know this can be a very difficult subject to talk about. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to Dave Anderson, Cara Olson or Jenny Munroe (913-422-1100).
