One School One Book
January 11, 2019
A Message from Terra Linda and our PTC:
The reading schedule is around 25 pages per night. Many of these pages are short, so we anticipate it will take between 10 and 15 minutes to read each evening. There are assigned pages Monday through Thursday only, for the next three weeks. The intent of One School One Book is that families read the book out loud together. We hope you are able to enjoy the story together!
Here is a brief introduction to the story:
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.
Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better. Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.
Why are we participating in One School, One Book? Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your student to be an effective reader and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. Reading material out loud that is beyond a student’s own reading level allows them to engage in a story they aren’t yet able to read alone. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students but that will still captivate older children. Please know there are some parts that may require explanation at an age appropriate level. There are other parts that are sad, so feel free to adjust what you read out loud to fit the needs of your family.
As part of this event, students will have the opportunity to answer trivia questions about the reading to encourage attentive listening. Trivia questions will be posted Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the lobby and library before school and will come from the previous two nights of reading. The trivia questions are just a fun way to engage with the book and keep everyone’s interest high!
We are looking forward to having our entire community of students, families, and staff reading the same book at the same time so we can discuss what is happening in the story and enjoy the experience together. If you need an audio version, we are planning to post how to listen to each night’s reading assignment on our Terra Linda website under the Parents & Students tab: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/schools/terra-linda
