PRAIRIE POST
May 22, 2020
Message from the Principal
Hello Prairie Families and Friends,
I’m excited to be back from maternity leave because I am able to reconnect with our students and staff members! I missed you all! Shout out to Mrs. Gannon for filling in while I was on leave. We are adjusting well to having a new family member at home. Zodi is sleeping for longer stretches of time, and she has learned how to smile! Phoenix loves having a little sister.
I’m thrilled to announce that we have some exciting events planned for our Prairie Pumas in the near future. We will have a parade on Friday, June 5th. Prairie staff members will parade through the attendance area to say hello to our Prairie families. The parade route will be shared at the end of next week. We will continue the tradition of our fifth grade clap out this year to celebrate our fifth grade students. This event will take place on Tuesday, June 9th at 3:00 pm. The fifth grade clap out is only for fifth grade students and their families. More information for both events will be shared in the upcoming weeks.
Take some time to relax, unplug, and enjoy the long weekend!
Stay safe,
Carly Solberg

Pick Up of Student Supplies
Tuesday & Wednesday, May 26 & 27
Below are the dates and times for pick up of student supplies. Please follow the instructions below to maximize safety, minimize waiting time and help us with a smooth, organized process.
This will be set up as a drive through curbside pick up in the front parking lot. No one will be allowed to leave their cars for everyone’s safety.
If you must walk to school, please meet our staff at Door 2 on the kindergarten playground and wait at the designated spot. Social distancing guidelines will need to be followed, and children will not be allowed to play on the playground.
Your child/ren’s supplies from their classroom, artwork, Step it Up prizes, yearbook (if ordered) and any medications from the health room will be included in their bag.
Please assemble any library books, books in a bag, and other classroom materials to bring with you to be returned to us.
Before arriving, please write your child/ren’s first and last name and grade on a large piece of paper in big bold letters.
Upon arriving, you will be greeted by a member of our staff who will take your name and radio it to staff in the gym who will be pulling your bags.
Next you will stop by the office front doors to return any library books and school materials mentioned above to the staff member there.
You will then proceed to the end of the front driveway (near the bike racks). Please hold up your name sign again, and another staff member will safely bring your bags to your car. You may pop your trunk if you’d like them put in the trunk.
Students will keep their iPads over the summer. If you are moving, please contact our IT Help Desk at 272-970-1073 to arrange a time to take it to our District Office.

Library Book Return
Here is some helpful information as you get ready to return library books to school when you are picking up belongings from school next week.
- Any items left in classrooms will be returned to the library by the teachers as they organize student items.
- You will be sent a notice of all materials checked out to your student via email through our library system. You can also login to the library system to see your student's account. See the directions below.
- Please follow the school instructions for returning materials outlined above.
- All library materials will be checked in about a week after the pick-up days to allow a time of quarantine for the safety of the library staff. Returned items will not be reflected in the student library account until that time.
- No fees will be charged for returned items. The system automatically assigns a fee for late materials, but the fees are dropped once the items are checked in.
- If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Koplin (mkoplin@waukesha.k12.wi.us)
Here is the process for logging into student library accounts:
- Go to https://sdw.waukesha.k12.wi.us/domain/81
- Click on your child's school. The school library home page will open.
- In the upper right corner of the library home page click on login.
- The username is the beginning of the student email (example: sstudent001) The password this the student lunch code and safeword (example: 123456fun)
- Click on the MyInfo tab on the top left part of the page. You will see a list of books that the student has checked out.

Social Emotional Learning
This week's SEL lesson focused on mindfulness, including different tips and strategies to help students cope during COVID-19. Students learned that mindfulness is the practice of being aware in the present moment. Mindfulness involves paying full attention, while allowing thoughts and emotions to come and go without judgement. Students learned that mindfulness can help us feel calm when stressed or worried, control anger, and feel peace and happiness. Specific techniques include progressive muscle relaxation, grounding exercises, body scan, and guided imagery. Students and families are encouraged to continue exploring the plethora of mindfulness strategies and activities that are available online, and on different iPad apps. Below are a few helpful parent resources:
