Our Mission
At Salem, we realize all children are individuals, and this may be their first experience in social living. Our desired goal in working with all children is growth.
We strive to create a stimulating environment for each child that will promote and foster his/her interests and curiosity, thus promoting optimal learning. This learning will incorporate the development of academic, relationship, and citizenship skills, a requirement for functioning in our society as productive citizens.
Principal's Message
Dear Salem Elementary Parents and Community,
As principal of Salem Township Elementary, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another great year at Little Miami Local Schools. We are all excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways, filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our mission to help every child feel welcomed, connected, and a part of our Salem Family. Additionally, we strive to challenge each student to grow in his or her academic abilities and be college and career ready. At Salem, we have great teachers who spend hours planning and creating classroom activities to engage our students in learning. Our teachers utilize research-based best practices and analyze academic data to determine skill levels and set goals for growth and improvement.
I am honored to serve as the principal of Salem Township Elementary. It is truly a privilege to be part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth.
Once again, welcome back! Let us make it another great year at Salem together!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa M. Smith

Helpful Handbook Reminders
School Lunch
School lunch fees may be paid on-line or by sending money with your child. Students are allowed to charge two meals. We suggest marking your calendar when your child’s prepaid meals end or taping an extra day’s lunch money inside your child’s book bag to cover a day when lunch money is accidentally forgotten. Free and reduced meal forms are available on-line or in the office for eligible students.
We promote healthy eating and wellness initiatives. Students are expected to eat lunch unless they have a note from parents giving them permission to skip lunch. Milk, water, and juice are available for purchase with lunch. Pop is not available to students during the school day and should not be part of packed lunches. Students are permitted to buy two snack items with their lunch unless the parent indicates otherwise. Students are not allowed to buy snacks instead of lunch.
Lunch concerns should be directed to Rachel Tilford, Food Service Director, at 899-5130.
Prices for 2016-17 are:
Breakfast - $1.35 *
Lunch - $2.40*
Milk - 55¢*
*Student lunch prices are subject to change.

4 Helpful Tips that can make Reading at Home go from Frustrating to Engaging
Many, many families view reading as a challenge, an anxiety-filled stressor. Here are four helpful tips that will help make reading more engaging and less frustrating in your home:
1. Make a reading date. Find a new place to read books. Is there a fun place in your house that your child could go and read, a place outside, a local coffee shop, or even the library? Sometimes changing the location of reading makes a really big difference in attitude!
2. Read with your child. Maybe you’re reading out loud with your child, or maybe you’re both just reading the same book at the same time. No matter what your child’s age, either way works. Knowing a bit about the book will not only allow you to support your child’s reading and understanding of the text, but it will provide great conversation starters for you was well.
3. Find some meaningful connections between your child and the book. Making connections with the text is one way that readers can really begin to understand and appreciate what they’re reading. Consider the following possible connections:
Is your child the same age or gender as a character?
Does your child share interests or talents with a character?
How does the setting of the story compare with your child’s home, town, or school?
What kind of struggles do characters experience? How do they compare with your child’s life.
4. Make sure they like the book they are reading. This time should be reading a good fit book that they enjoy. Whatever genre, type, style, let them read what they enjoy.
Give these four ideas a try and see if it makes the reading experience at home less frustrating and more engaging. If you continue to see that this is a challenge and frustrating for your child, be sure to contact your child's teacher.
Counselor's Corner
Hello! I am the school counselor for kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grades. My role as your child’s school counselor is to provide support in 3 main areas: academic success, social/emotional development, and career awareness. I work with students individually, in small groups, and I visit all of the classrooms to provide lessons to the entire class. When possible, groups are scheduled during the lunch time of the student so that no classroom instruction is missed. If you are interested in your child meeting with me individually or in a small group, please click HERE.
Please note that Preschool parents should contact Erin Losey and their child's teacher with any concerns about your preschooler. Mrs. Losey's number is 513-899-5275 ext. 45103.
Another aspect of my role is to connect families to resources. I invited several local agencies to talk to parents during Open House (pictured above).

Clinic News
The clinic is in need of girls and boys pants and long sleeve shirts. We would appreciate donations of lightly used pants sizes 4-10, preferably elastic waist and not jeans. Also, in order to keep a steady supply of clothing items in the clinic, please remember to wash and return, in a timely manner, any clothing items used. Thank you!!
