We Will Not Forget Sept. 11, 2001
America was forever changed. It has been 19 years since the attacks, but that tragic day, which served as a true test of the American spirit, will be remembered always.
“The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life...” ~ Rudy Giuliani

COHORT UPDATES
The Anchorage School District is currently re-evaluating its School Start Plan. The original plan included bringing back students in two cohorts. While It is unclear at this time if we will be starting in-person instruction utilizing the Cohort A & Cohort B model, we still want to plan for its possibility.
We are currently in the process of analyzing our grade-level enrollment data. In order to create two cohorts relatively equal in size for all grade levels, we may have to veer from the traditional A-M and N-Z alphabet split.
Our main priority will be to keep students from the same family in the same cohort to minimize disruptive transportation, scheduling, and supervision/childcare issues.
Please email Principal Carroll at carroll_deanne@asdk12.org if you:
- Would like to request to be in a particular cohort, with a particular student, due to carpooling considerations.
- If you plan to continue with EACS Online at home (Monday-Friday) instead of sending your student to in-person instruction.
Please include the first and last names, as well as the grade level of each student involved in your request. We will do our best to honor requests however, we hope that you will understand if we are unable to do so.
HISTORY OF GRANDPARENTS DAY
On the first Sunday after Labor Day, we celebrate National Grandparents Day. This year the date falls on September 13.
In 1969, nine-year-old Russell Capper sent President Nixon a letter suggesting that a day should be set aside in order to celebrate grandparents. On June 12, 1969, he received a letter back from Rose Mary Woods — Personal Secretary to the President — reading, “Dear Russell, Thank you for your letter to President Nixon. Your suggestion regarding a Grandparent’s Day is appreciated, but the President ordinarily issues proclamations designating periods for special observance only when a Congressional resolution authorizes him to do so. With best wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the President.”
Following this letter, Marian McQuade was recognized nationally by the U.S. Senate and by President Jimmy Carter as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade wanted to educate the youth about the importance of seniors and the contributions they have made throughout history. She urged the youth to “adopt” a grandparent and learn more about their lives, challenges, and desires for the future.
In 1977, Senator Randolph, with the help of other senators, introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the president to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents’ Day’.” Congress passed the legislation, proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparent’s Day. On August 3, 1978, Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation, and the day was finally celebrated the following year.
MILK CREATES
Whether you are new to Eagle Academy or a returning family, have one student or multiple students at our school, sharing the responsibility of educating your child at home in the age of COVID can be a little bit overwhelming.
Whether your student(s) are doing the work at the kitchen table or bringing it back and forth from your office or the sitters, it all needs to be dealt with and organized.
Using milk creates for file storage is an easy way to organize schoolwork, transport materials, and stash out of the way when not in use.
Materials:
- Milk creates (1 per student)
- Pack of hanging file folders (1 per student)
The materials for each subject go into a file folder. You can also add folders for, work completed, work to be reviewed/checked, and work to be submitted to Mr./Mrs. _______. Textbooks, readers, and pencil/school supply pouches also fit nicely for transport.
Below are photo examples (some from our very own EACS families).
