Twitter and Twitter EDU Chats- #37
What is Twitter?
- T- Teacher
- Ss- Students
- RT- Retweet
- TIL- Today I Learned
- #- This is a hashtag that is used to refer to a topic or chat
- RTQ- Read the Question or Retweet The Question
- @- used to reply to a Twitter user
There are several more that I could add to this list, but these are the top symbols I see when using Twitter.
Why Use Twitter As An Educator?
If you do not have a Twitter account, I would like to challenge you to try it out. If you need help or assistance, please let me know and I would love to help.
If you're wanting to build a personal learning network through Twitter, don't forget to keep your personal account (comments, pics, etc.) separate from your professional account.
What is an EduChat?
An EduChat is a place on Twitter where all educators around the world come together to talk openly about topics regarding education. Teachers share ideas, ask questions, and help one another through their teaching journey.
Different EduChats call for different hashtags. A hashtag followed by words or a slogan help the Twitter user find the chat easily and help with communicating with other members in the chat. An EduChat will usually follow a Q1/A1 format. The moderator will usually ask Question 1 (Q1) and the attendees will reply by using A1 for answer 1 followed by the hashtag. The EduChat usually last for an hour.
Examples of Hashtags: #mwisdmatters, #RamTechChat, #edtechchat, #LamarPride #TravisRocks, #KidsDeserveIt
Why Participate?
After being involved in EduChats, I have found it to be an informal form of professional development. EduChats are a great tool for us as educators to continue a healthy discussion on all things education. With our MWISD mission statement and vision including our ever-changing global community, I realize that as a teacher I have to change and adapt to my 21st century student's needs. With adapting, I realized I needed to find different ways to engage my students. This is where EduChats come in. I was able to communicate with our educators around the world and "borrow" their ideas. The great thing is, I still collaborate with them today. So, take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and have fun chatting!
