The Heaton Weekly
January 18th-22nd, 2021
Principal's Message for the Week of January 18th
Good morning Heaton Staff,
It was great to reconnect with so many of you at last week's Buyback, and to be back in classrooms reconnecting with our students and families. They definitely missed us!
Thank you all for being invested in our work and persevering through some of the most trying times our nation has seen in decades.
There are many reasons to become overwhelmed and to feel anxious these days, so let's stick together and rely upon one another for support.
We are a family and we all care about one another's well-being.
Reach out to connect with Mr. Hansen and me during our morning office hours--we love it when you simply come in to say good morning.
Let's have another amazing week at Heaton!
Laura Gemetti,
Principal

Inclusive Lessons on CIPL
For the past few months, CIPL has distributed inclusive lessons to better reflect the accomplishments and representation of historically and socially relevant persons. We do this to build knowledge, foster a sense of awareness and empathy, and to help create a sense of belonging for students who identify with the highlighted focus groups.
This is work in progress, and while CIPL is creating lessons to honor national and locally recognized observances, we know these contributions need to be celebrated all year long.
To house these lessons, an Inclusive Curriculum webpage has been created on the CIPL internal staff page. https://fusd.sharepoint.com/sites/dept_curr/Pages/default.aspx
Fifth Grade Music Updates -- Self-selection Time
Message From Visual and Performing Arts
Starting in January, fifth grade students will be able to opt into a specific music domain, such as band, strings or choir, as they would if students were in-person. Over the next few weeks, music teachers will be working with the fifth grade classroom teachers and students to give all fifth grade students and parents an opportunity to self-select into the options offered at each school site. Parent letters will be sent out soon via email in English, Spanish, and Hmong, giving parents the information and self-selection form to complete with their students.
For students who do not wish to continue in music classes, an asynchronous music lesson will be provided each week.
Questions: Email Catherine Aujero, visual and performing arts manager at catherine.aujero@fresnounified.org.

AVID--Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
From AVID CoP
I wanted to take a moment to remind you of the coaching sessions that are available to you as resource for attending AVID Digital XP this summer.
The 30-minute coaching sessions are one on one, where you identify a specific problem of practice related to the 4 big ideas of from summer AVID DigitalXP learning and we collaborate to develop potential solutions.
I have attached the link to Setting Up a CoP coaching session below.
Heaton Instructional Leadership Team (ILT)

- Chelsea Howard, 2nd Grade
- Destani Walker, 3rd Grade
- Jose Ruiz, 4th Grade
- Savanna Hoffman, 5th Grade
- Jasmine Marby, 6th Grade
School-wide Goal: By June 2021, Heaton math proficiency will increase by 10% as measured on SBAC (3rd-6th) and i-Ready Diagnostic Benchmarks (K-6th).
Teachers in 3rd-6th grades will be taking part in TNTP professional development on December 1st, 8th and 15th.
The New Teacher Project (TNTP) approaches mathematics and instruction through rigorous, grade-level content, concepts and aligned strategies to the Math Progressions.
Six of our Heaton teachers took part in similar training this summer for the Good2Great math summer program.
One of the strategies teachers learned and continue to implement is the Three Reads Strategy, which ensures students understand what the math word problem is asking them to do before trying to "solve" it. This is critical to student confidence and performance in mathematics.

Heaton Extended Learning Program-HELP-had a Successful Winter Program!
Hello All,
Hope you are doing well. Our Heaton Winterland has been very successful this year. We have seen a total of 30 - 32 students everyday we have been running!
Students have been doing STEAM led activities during Enrichment. They have also been learning Sign language, we hope to be able to sing the entire song of "You Are My Sunshine" in ASL by the end of next week. Physical Education and Social emotional learning has also been a success.
Students have been actively participating in these activities. Parents have been sending us pictures of the students' activities and we have uploaded them to our website. I will link the Website down below.
Thank you everyone for all the support we have received.
