School Safety Week - March 11-15
Dear Pine Knob Elementary Parents,
I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you an update on our safety drills this year. As many of you know, Clarkston Community Schools has provided our staff with training in ALICE with the intent to secure a safe environment for teaching and learning. As a district, we will be conducting a district-wide Safety Week during the week of March 11-15. This will involve tornado and fire drills and introduce our students to our new ALICE training.
ALICE is federally endorsed and is intended to provide our staff and students with proactive, options-based strategies in the event that an intruder enters Pine Knob Elementary with the intent to harm members within our school community. We will no longer group together in a corner for a lockdown drill, as we have in the past, as we now know this way is not the safest action for staff and students.
On Monday, March 11, I will be meeting with all students to introduce ALICE at a age appropriate, grade level mini assemblies. Teachers will follow up with their students afterwards to review safety within their classrooms in the areas of situational awareness, evacuation, different ways to exit as well as barricading. Our co-curricular teachers will also briefly discuss safety within their classrooms as students attend throughout the week.
I encourage you to talk with your child(ren) about PKE’s safety week and how ALICE is different from past lockdown drills we have practiced in the past. If you would like to familiarize yourself with ALICE, you can go to the ALICE Institute to learn more. You can also contact me at 248-623-3901 if you have any questions or feel your child may need additional support during our Safety Week.

BOWLING FOR A CAUSE
The Alley Cats (Kelly Anderson, Michele Allen, Julie Brookes and Diane Tynan) represented PKE proud by putting their bowling skills to action during the recent C.A.Y.A. bowl-a-thon held on February 24. Thanks to the donations made by our entire staff we were able to have our school help raise funds for C.A.Y.A. (Clarkston Area Youth Assistance) programs. It was a win-win for all!
March is Reading Month
Girls on the Run Volunteers Needed
We are in need of parent volunteers to help with our 2019 Spring season of Girls on the Run. Unfortunately, PKE staff are not available to help this season due to other commitments. If there are several volunteers, they would be able to divide and conquer when it comes to teaching lessons and other coaching duties.
GOTR Fall 2018 Season Highlights!
When: The season starts Monday, March 18 and runs until May 16 with the 5k at a Metro park on Sunday, May 19. Sessions run 2x weekly on Monday/Wednesday from 3:30 -5:00 p.m.. Some coaches may need to go thru a GOTR training, CPR and 1st aide . You may already have these certifications.
Where: PKE Room 108 (near the 5th grade hall), outside in the back field, and in the gym in case of bad weather
What can I do: we need coaches ( the lessons are easy, fun and all planned out), someone to help with parent info ( email ), help with snacks ( we have a meijer cash card).
Please contact Janet Green if you have questions or ideas.
Thanks-
Janet Green
