ALICE Information Meeting for Parents
Ensuring a safe physical environment in our schools is paramount. With your support through bond approvals, over the last six years we have significantly upgraded our safety and security measures at all District schools and facilities. From swipe card entry technology to entry buzzer systems, secure vestibules, and thousands of surveillance cameras, we do everything we can to keep our students, staff, and visitors safe.
In addition to physical upgrades, our staff members train students, annually, on a variety of safety drills, including fire, tornado, lock-down, shelter-in-place, and evacuations. New for the 2019-2020 school year will be the introduction of ALICE safety protocols, which prepare for a violent-intruder event. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. This nationally endorsed law enforcement best practice is a proactive, options-based strategy for encountering a violent intruder.
We are proud to have strong partnerships with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department as well as the following Police Departments: Novi, Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, White Lake, Wixom, Wolverine Lake, Orchard Lake, and Farmington. All nine of these law enforcement agencies have ALICE trained officers who will be assisting individual schools with educational sessions, staff and student training, and safety drill implementation.
We will be offering two parent sessions to learn more about ALICE:
- Elementary Schools -- Tuesday, October 29, 2019 @ Oakley Park Elementary – 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Middle & High Schools – Wednesday, October 30, 2019 @ Clifford Smart Middle School – 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
We encourage you to ask questions and share your thoughts by either attending one of our upcoming Parent Information Sessions or by providing feedback at our designated email: alice@wlcsd.org.
We recognize the sensitivity and deep emotions associated with this topic. Therefore, throughout the school year, both the District and individual schools will continue to communicate with the entire school community as we move forward together on this journey toward maximizing safety and preparedness at every facility in the District.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Gutman Chris DelgadoSuperintendent of Schools Deputy Superintendent of Schools
Fifth Grade Camp Update
Parents should drop fifth graders off to the cafeteria at 9:15 AM on Wednesday, October 23rd. Students and parents will gather in the cafeteria with their gear. If you need to leave for work, you may. You may also stay to see students off. Mr. Drewno will be in the cafeteria to check students in.
We will have three buses. One bus will be for luggage only. We will need parent and student help to get this bus loaded with luggage. These buses will be parked on the blacktop area on our playground. The other two buses will transport students to camp. These are the buses our chaperones will ride with students. We will have two classes on each bus.
All medications should be taken directly to the office. Mr. Drewno will be driving all medications over to the Outdoor Center for students.
Parents will need to pick up students at 11:30 AM on Friday, October 25th in the Media Center at Dublin. Students and parents will be needed to unload buses quickly. Students will be dismissed to go home after they have all of their gear.
Halloween Parties-10/31
This is also a HALF DAY of school with professional learning in the afternoon.
Students will be dismissed at 12:25 PM that day. Parents are invited to attend parties during this time. Parking will be available on our playground blacktop area. Visitors should always check in at our main office. Please check with your child's teacher on special party details. As always, costumes must be appropriate and safe for elementary school.
Buster the Bus Visits Dublin
The Michigan Department of Education recommends that: “every school bus driver conduct an emergency evacuation of pupils from the school bus at least three (3) times per year (front, rear, and front/rear combination).”
In compliance with this recommendation, keeping SAFETY as a top priority, the Walled Lake/Dean Transportation bus drivers and BUSTER THE BUS will be doing a skit about safe bus riding practices. Your child’s bus driver will explain and lead the children through a practice bus evacuation. This evacuation will be done on school property. They will also watch several short videos on bus and bus stop safety.
This program is for students in kindergarten through 2nd grade. We will do a program for the 3rd – 5th graders later in the school year.
If you have any questions, you may email Jill Segal: jillsegal@wlcsd.org
Elementary Open House-WE NEED YOU!
From 6:00-7:00 PM, the architects from TMP will be at Dublin in our Media Center to share information and updates on our new building, and also gain feedback from parents, staff members, and community members as we create vision for our new school and come up with the schematic design and plans.
Please join us at Dublin from 6:00-7:00 PM to give feedback and ask any questions you have about our new school.
Our Student Council kids will be meeting with the architects from 4:30-5:30 to give them their feedback and ideas for our new school building.

Remind-Get Connected!
- Due to changes with the REMIND service, it is necessary to set up several separate grade level groups rather than one group for the entire school. We have created a REMIND GROUP for EACH GRADE LEVEL.
- It will be necessary for you to sign up again this year for REMIND to receive information, even if you signed up last year.
- If you have students in more than one grade level, feel free to sign up for multiple classes, but keep in mind you will receive multiple text messages with the same information.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the main office @ 248.956.3800.

Morning Meeting
During the month of OCTOBER, we are focusing on the following important skills for learning:
- Listening with Attention
- Focusing Attention
- Using our Self-Talk
- Being Assertive
Please talk with your child about our morning meeting time. Talk with them about the skills for learning.
We also spend time recognizing students who have been exhibiting positive actions or words, celebrating birthdays for the week, reviewing important announcements for everyone, doing the pledge, and practicing our new Dublin Elementary Promise.
If you have questions about Dublin's Morning Meeting, please ask your child's teacher. They will be happy to talk to you about it, or better yet....talk with your child about it. Students are excited and learning a lot in this short time at the beginning of every week at school.
We look forward to this each and every week!
Please see our monthly themes and skills below..

• see and practice with online M-STEP practice questions and tools
• learn about the Read by Grade 3 law

Lunchroom Volunteers Needed
Time: 11:30-1:30
Days: Monday - Friday
If you are able to assist in our lunchroom any day and from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM or part of that time, please email Mr. Drewno at jeffreydrewno@wlcsd.org and we will get you started!
i-Ready
Your child's teacher will be sending home an iReady Parent Report which will describe how your child did on the assessment, and areas of strength and areas of improvement needed.
Parents can help by encouraging students to work on the iReady math and reading instructional modules at home for 45-60 minutes per week or more. These online instructional lessons will help students become more proficient in math and reading and better prepare them for the second diagnostic that will take place mid-year.
If you have questions about iReady, your parent report, or the instructional lessons, please reach out to your child's teacher for information. We are ready to assist you in helping your child at home to become a better reader, writer, and mathematician.
Third Grade Reading Retention Law
Being a good reader is critical for children to be successful in school. In 2017, the Michigan Legislature implemented the Third Grade Reading Law to ensure that students exit third-grade reading at or above grade level, which will impact the current 2017-2018 first-grade students by the time they are in third-grade.
In accordance with this law, and as a means of better informing classroom instruction, districts will be providing K-3 reading assessments to students across the state. These assessments will identify students who need intensive reading instruction and intervention, and will also provide useful information to help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual student needs.
- Letter from Walled Lake Schools on Reading Retention Law.
- The law also requires districts to provide early and regular written communication with parents of K-3 students with reading difficulties. Communication will include information about current services being provided, additional reading supports planned for your child, and a read-at-home plan for you to help your child at home.
- Reading Retention Michigan House Bill No. 4822
- I-Ready Reading Assessment that Walled Lake has been utilizing the past three years.
- K-3 literacy instruction in Walled Lake, includes this the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy booklet.
Invisible Dad Lunch Program
In Walled Lake Schools, the 12 WL elementary schools have adopted the Invisible Dad program which entitles all children to a school lunch, even if a student’s lunch account does not have money in it.
Invisible Dad accounts have been set up at our schools to cover lunch for children whose parents have forgotten, are unable, or for whatever reason have not kept their account up-to-date. Parents receive a confidential notification that their child has accessed the Invisible Dad account and they are given an opportunity to update the account, complete a Free and Reduced Lunch form or to talk to a school administrator.
For more information on the Invisible Dad Program, visit the program's webpage.
TO DONATE: Please make a check out to your Walled Lake School with Invisible Dad in the “memo” line. This money will keep the account for your school able to continue this important program.
