High School Mathematics Institute
Increasing Understanding and Access to Algebraic Functions
Functions are foundational.
How do we help students build understanding and habits of mind related to functions that will carry throughout the Algebra 1 course?
This two-day institute is designed to illustrate how teachers can launch an Algebra 1 course with lessons that equip students with strategies and tools to study and build enduring understanding of functions.
Participants will collaboratively engage in math tasks that have multiple entry points and provide opportunities to build conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Explore SAT Items
How might these foundational concepts, tools, and habits of mind increase students' ability to perform on standardized assessments? Participants will explore released SAT items and ways in which the habits of mind developed in studying functions have potential to increase students' success.
Instructional Strategies to Support ALL Learners
Participants will have opportunities to experience and dialogue around:
- instructional strategies to support ALL students in sense-making and reasoning,
- multiple representations and problem solving approaches,
- effective integration of technology,
- conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, and
- connections among major algebraic ideas.
