PRAIRIE POST
February 28, 2020
Message from the Principal
Hello Prairie Families,
It's hard to believe that February has already come and gone. All of our Prairie Pumas are hoping for some warmer weather to come along with March! February was a month that included many exciting events, but don't worry, there are more to come in March! Our second and third-grade learners have been working hard to prepare for their music concert that is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3rd at 6:30pm. I look forward to seeing many of you there!
Throughout the month of February, our classrooms celebrated Black History Month in a variety of ways. Students learned the history of the Underground Railroad and how it relates to Waukesha through books they are reading, articles and videos. Students read books about influential African Americans and discussed how the actions of those individuals made a positive impact. Students researched and wrote biographies on influential African Americans. Students explored various resources about African Americans including Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr., Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, and other pioneers of change. Students created infographics to teach about influential African Americans. Students decorated the hallways with quotes from Martin Luther King Junior. Take a look at some of the highlights from our different grade levels below! A group of fourth-grade students has been working hard on producing our video announcements for each morning, which have highlighted influential African Americans. The announcements also highlight students from our building leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Puma Way.
At recess, our goal for the month is inviting others to play. When students come in from recess they are able to recognize other students who invited them to play. These names are then listed on a board in the hallway to celebrate all of the times students are inviting one another to join games outside. We have MANY names listed! This goal is helping to promote inclusion at recess!
Next week we are celebrating Read Across America! Our students and staff are excited to engage in a variety of special reading activities. Take a look below for more information.
Have a great weekend!

Communicable Disease Message from District Nurses
Dear Families:
Due to the increase in reported cases of influenza and the media attention given to the coronavirus (COVID-19) recently, we are reaching out to families to share recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for keeping your family safe and healthy, and preventing the spread of communicable illnesses.
The CDC is recommending the following actions to prevent infection:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home when you are sick
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then discard tissue in trash
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
In addition, please help us prevent the spread of illness in our schools by reviewing the district’s “Too Sick For School” guidelines, and keeping your child home when they are ill. As a reminder, the “Too Sick For School” guidelines require that your child be vomit-free, diarrhea-free, and fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for 24 hours before they return to school. A fever is defined by the district as a temperature greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit when taken orally.

This event is for beginner/novice swimmers in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. It is designed to give swimmers the opportunity to see what a swim team and a swim meet are like. Most importantly, it is designed for swimmers to have FUN with friends and teammates.
The events are grouped by grade and gender: 3rd graders vs. 3rd graders; 4th graders vs. 4th graders; and 5th graders vs. 5th graders. Girls race against girls; Boys race against boys. Individual 25 yd swimming events will have preliminary races and a final race of the top 8 finishers. Relay and 50 yd. events will be timed finals. Each swimmer can only participate in two individual events.
