FACS Finishes First Quarter . . .

Yes, each student had to compare their eating choices with the recommendations listed on "MY Plate" site. Most found they were a little low, especially when the checked out their vegetable choices. So, what did we do about our findings? Yup, we tried to make a few recipes that included vegetables, but also tried to hide them! One of our success stories included some Zucchini Cookies. Not bad!!
Students also searched for ideas and created some pretty awesome Fall Fruit/Vegetable Trays. The BHS Foods classes also became involved and picked the BEST trays as they viewed each on a slide presentation. These may be viewed on the FACS website.
After a quick refresher course about the correct way to handle a Baby Lock sewing machine, we started on our sewing projects. Some made cartoon pillows, while others worked on sports bag. All were challenging, but turned out as hoped!
Our final activity transported us back in time to. . . Preschool! Ms. Henning, our assistant principal drove the students to the "Newly Updated" preschool. Students interacted as they played and observed the a very busy Child Care career. Would anyone like to work at this place of employment? Well, a few said yes, some said no, and others were not sure. But all enjoyed the playtime and a little time away from school!

Next up, sewing. Many had never used a sewing machine before, so we took this new experience slowly. First, sewing on paper. Then learning how to thread the machine and sewing on scrap fabric. Finally, students were able to start on a pillow project. They ended with a bag. Some are wondering what they will do next year. And so am I, since the HAAN craft company will no longer be in business. But I'm sure that another idea will be discovered!!
Here are a few projects completed during the sewing unit.

All were ready for the last part of the curriculum - our FOODS unit. Highlights here included . . . "My Plate" information, Kitchen safety and Food safety, and of course accurate measuring. All were practiced as we made Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips, Bubble Ring, and Oatmeal Cookies.
Fun groups! Will look forward to working with them as 7th graders!
