Curriculum Corner
Reading
In shared reading, we have been using the topic of the San Francisco Earthquake to learn the difference between a firsthand and secondhand accounts. All of our students have been deeply engaged during our discussions on this topic. This week they used their new knowledge on the San Francisco earthquake to conduct a partner interview. All of our actors and actresses took the stage to interview or be interviewed about their horrible earthquake experience. We recorded these for you to watch at Academic Night.
Writing
We have introduced our "Walk Through History" project and parent event. If the students have not selected a book, they need to choose one over the break. We will be starting to read and take notes from the book, immediately after the break. The students will be using this chapter book as their primary source to research and take notes about their biography subject. The more quality information they have in their notes, the more they will have to choose from when they are working on their final reports, speeches, and posters.
Math
We have completed our Unit 6 chapter on fractions, however, there is still more fraction work to come in Unit 7. The students have been learning how to compare fractions with unlike denominators and identify equivalent fractions. This chapter is full of new skills, so we have slowed down on our pace. Please encourage your child to complete all of the homework, so that they can be successful with the new material that is being taught. Everyone will continue to be challenged as we apply fractions and decimals to our real world situations.
Science/Social Studies
We have concluded our journey to the Midwest. We had to recently revise the curriculum on Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs for winning the World Series in 2016!
