Principal's Message
It’s hard to believe Spring Break is next week! When we return on April 2, we will have less than three months before summer vacation. I’m looking forward to this quality learning time with our students! As we head into this week-long break, please enjoy the time together as a family. Play some board games, go outside for walks, find activities in the community, or gather for a meal. The only additional thing I ask is that your children read every day for at least 30 minutes. This is the best way to maintain the skills they have learned up to this point, and we don’t want any student losing ground and starting behind after spring break.
When we return in April, spring activities will be in full swing, so time after school can be much busier. Please continue to find 30 minutes each night for students to read independently. Though we provide time at school to read each day, students need more time than we can provide. By working together to provide independent reading time at home and at school, we can help each of our students improve their reading levels and be ready for next year.
Thank you for keeping the focus on reading at home. It is well worth the effort!
Kind Regards,
Christy
Kindergarten Orientation Thursday, April 12
Do you know a family with a child ready for Kindergarten? Encourage them to join us at Terra Linda on April 12 at 6:00 pm. Parents/Guardians and the incoming Kindergartener are invited. Teachers will run activities for the soon-to-be Kindergarteners while our principal, Christy Batsell, meets with adults in the gym. Representatives from our PTC, our on-site childcare option, Cedar Mill Library, and our Cafeteria staff will be available to answer questions.
Terra Linda Makerspace
Thanks to a generous donation from the Terra Linda PTC, we will be starting a Makerspace at Terra Linda. The definitions of “Makerspace” are many and varied, but at Terra Linda we are aiming for a space that provides opportunities for exploration in technology (coding, robotics, engineering) and art (design process & creation). We are excited about this project, and we already have some creative technology to get our Makerspace started!
We would also love donations of arts & crafts supplies and recycled materials for the Terra Linda Makerspace. We’ll take almost anything students can use to make and create. See this list for suggestions. Even small amounts of any material will be very much appreciated!
Early Release at Terra Linda
At Terra Linda, we are so appreciative of the time we can spend together each Wednesday afternoon focusing on what our students need. We wanted to share what our some of our teachers have been up to. Recently, first grade teachers reviewed and enhanced an end-of-unit assessment in math to make sure they were gathering accurate information from students and providing a range of questions to allow all students to demonstrate what they know. Second grade teachers prepared a book series unit to engage all readers this spring. Third grade teachers met to design the rubric they would use to give students feedback on their oral summaries. They also generated the lessons and sample responses to help students meet their high expectations. And fourth grade teachers reviewed student work in math and calibrated their scoring to align their feedback to students. We will share more examples this spring. Thank you for supporting our teachers with this incredible gift of time. Students are truly benefiting!
Family Input Form - Optional
Each year we offer an opportunity for families to provide us with input before we make decisions about class placements for the upcoming school year. While we do not take requests for specific teachers, parent/guardian input will be considered in the formation of classes. Teachers carefully consider a number of factors to create balanced classes, including gender, academic levels, second language needs, special education needs, talented and gifted needs, and behavior needs. Families will be notified of class placements prior to the Back to School Picnic in August. This form is due by 4:00 pm on Friday, May 4, 2018.
Student Survey Notification
Student Survey Notification
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Christy Batsell, Principal at Terra Linda, prior to Monday, April 9.

District Calendar for 2018-2019
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure families are aware. Please download the calendar here, or visit the District calendar webpage to view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
