Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
March 31, 2017
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
Recently, FPS staff has been working with various local, state, and federal officials to update our Radiological Plan. Although the plan format is similar to prior plans, a significant adjustment has been made to our response. Obviously, a specific response is directly affected by the actual emergency event. In any case, we hope to have adequate time to safely transport bus riders home, allow parents to pick up children from school, or shelter your child(ren) at school. In the case of an extreme event, we will follow the plan to evacuate students to the Hearnes Center in Columbia. Obviously, we will take every precaution for student safety and follow directions of the Callaway County Emergency Management Officials.
Parent contact during a Radiological Emergency will follow inclement weather procedures: email, text messaging, social media notifications, and local news media notification. If the emergency is during school/office hours, ONLY text notification will be made; if the emergency notification is during non-school/office hours, phone/text messaging will be implemented.
Our approved plan is attached for your information and use.
Thank you for sending us great kids to work with!
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
Superintendent

State Testing Information
If your child is in grade 3-8 or in Algebra I, Biology, English II, or Government at FHS, they are scheduled to take the Missouri Assessment Program tests during the district testing window of Tuesday, April 18, 2017 through Friday, May 12, 2017. The MAP is an assessment designed to measure the level of mastery your child has attained on the Missouri Show-Me Standards and the Missouri Learning Standards.
There are some ways in which you can enhance your child’s performance:
Do:
* Encourage your child to do his/her best.
* Make sure he/she gets proper rest and nutrition during the test dates.
* Have your child wear comfortable clothing.
* Protect your child from family pressures or problems if possible during testing.
Don’t:
* Forget that emphasis on test scores can be upsetting to children.
* Try to “cram” for the exam.
* Use undue threats or promises based on the outcome of his/her results.
* Judge your child on the basis of a test score. Many factors can influence test scores, and any test only tells part of the story.
Postcards will be mailed this summer for students in grades 3-8 with information regarding the delivery of your child’s assessment results. FHS students will receive their results in the mail with their final grade card at the end of May.
Assessment information can also be found in the Fulton Board of Education policy IL. The following excerpt addresses student participation in the state assessment.
Statewide Assessments
The district will implement the components of the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) in order to monitor the progress of all students in meeting the standards adopted by the Missouri State Board of Education. All students will participate in the Missouri Assessment Program.
End-of-course (EOC) assessments will be administered in accordance with law and the rules of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). In courses where EOC assessments are given, the superintendent will determine what percent of the course grade will be decided by performance on EOC assessments.
If a student is taking a course that requires an EOC assessment and is failing the course or for some other reason may be required to retake the course, the district may choose to delay administration of the EOC assessment until the student has completed the course the second time. A team consisting of the course instructor, the principal and a counselor will determine when delayed administration of an EOC assessment is appropriate. In the case of a student with an individualized education program (IEP), the IEP team will make the determination.
The School Board authorizes the superintendent to establish a process designed to encourage the students of this district to give their best efforts on each portion of any statewide assessment, which may include, but is not limited to, incentives or supplementary work as a consequence of performance.
The district’s policy on student participation in statewide assessments shall be provided at the beginning of the school year to each student and the parent/guardian or other person responsible for every student under 18 years of age. The policy will also be kept in the district office and be available for viewing by the public during business hours of the district office.

Thank you for your support during the assessment window.
Kindest regards,
Dr. Suzanne Hull, Assistant Superintendent
