February... Black History Month
February is National Black History Month; let us all strive to not limit ourselves nor our students' learning to an isolated heritage month.

To parents who chose an enrollment change...
*Students already in the hybrid model and staying onsite will begin 100% onsite (5 days a week) on Monday, February 15th.
**Students currently onsite but going online on March 11th (start of 3rd trimester), will attend their current class Monday through Friday starting Monday, Feb. 15th.
***Students currently online but switching to onsite March 11th, will continue online until the end of 2nd trimester and start thier new onsite class on March 11th.
6th grade families, given the number of students enrolled for 100% onsite starting on February 15th, 6th grade class assignment will be as follows:

Ms. Rummel is a welcome addition to the Grant Wood family, though she is not completely new. Ms. Rummel previosuly student taught with Mr. Dyer and has been with the District since her graduation from the University of Iowa in December.
Greetings from Ms. Trummel...
Hi, Grant Wood 6th Grade Families!
I am so excited to be joining the Wildcat family for the remainder of this school year as a 6th-grade teacher. My name is Destiny Rummel. In 2016, I graduated from Carroll High School, in Carroll Iowa, and moved to Iowa City to study Elementary Education and American Sign Language. December 2020, after student teaching with Travis Dyer, I graduated from the University of Iowa with my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Reading Endorsement. I have a 2-year-old husky named, Navie. I’ve been calling Iowa City home for the past 5 years, and have felt even more at home at Grant Wood.
In my free time, I’ve been reading a ton of books. I have a goal to read 52 books this year, 1 per week. Reading for leisure is one of the best ways to practice comprehension and fluency skills and I encourage your child to read each night. I also live a very active lifestyle: teaching fitness classes, as well as bicycling and golfing during the warm months. I will begin coaching track and field later this school year at Liberty High School. Once activities and athletic events are open to the public, PLEASE invite me to support your child outside of school, too.
I am dedicated to the growth, development, and academic success of your child, not only as a student but as an individual as well. My teaching philosophy is to create a positive and nurturing learning environment for all learners. Connecting with students is imperative when creating a collaborative experience in a classroom atmosphere. I have found that as connections grow, engagement within lessons, and discussions increase. I plan to frequently incorporate small group learning across all content areas, and individualized instruction to directly meet the needs of each student.
I will be sending out additional communication as I’d like to set up a time to meet with each family 1 on 1 during the remaining weeks of February. Having an open line of communication with each of you, is my number one priority; together, we are a team. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time. I plan to use Seesaw and email as my primary methods of communication.
I look forward to working with you and your child for the remainder of this school year!
Grit & Grace,
Ms. Destiny Rummel
SAEBERS - Universal Screener
Starting on February 16th, through February 26th, we will be administering a student universal screener, called mySAEBRS, provided through FastBridge Learning®. FastBridge Learning® is the same system we use for our reading and math screeners three times a year. The mySAEBRS screener asks students to complete a 20-item computer-based questionnaire related to their academic, emotional, and social skills.
Our school’s leadership team will review the screening scores after the testing period is complete and contact parents accordingly regarding results and next steps. Please contact Ms. Maria Martin (Interim-Principal), 319-688-1180 with any questions you may have.

Drop off, Pick up, parking, & driving...
we thank our Grant Wood parents for the many instances that they have demonstrated being Safe, Responsible, & Kind Wildcats just as our students. Your support is greatly appreciated.
As previously communciated, due to safety concerns that arose from vehicles in the back lot, families dropping off or picking up students at the back will need to do so at the gate and not from within the lot. Also, while we understand that everyone wants the opportunity for a prompt pick up experience when picking up their children from school, it is important that we respect our neighbors' private property and not use their driveways or block their driveways. This consideration is greatly appreciated by our community as a whole. Thank you!
Similarly, as we transition to 100% onsite with 5 days a week of onsite school - it will be imperative that drivers in the area use extra caution in our immediate and surrounding area - for the safety of our pedestrian students and families. Natually, safety within the parking lot is also the expectation.
At the parking lot, car line, it is imperative that driving parents/guradians remain in their vehicles and not leave vehicles unattended in the car line. This will be of extra importance as we transition to 100% onsite for our onsite enrollment.
Again, we thank our Grant Wood parents for the many instances that they, like our students have demonstrated being Safe, Responsible, & Kind Wildcats. Your support, patience, and understanding is very much appreciated.
Please call Ms. Maria (Principal) with any questions; 319-688-1180.
No Classroom Parties
*Please note that we will not have Valentine's parties nor exchanges. However, it is important to remember that showing love, compassion, friendship, empathy, and kindness daily remains a Grant Wood goal for which we do not necessarily need a party. Thank you for your support.

For health and safety reasons we cannot receive visitors onto our campus beyond the office. No visitors into our classrooms nor our cafeteria. No more "snow days" ...District change
Below are some changes to the District's approach to inclement weather days this year. Moving forward, the District will provide online instruction on days when the weather prevents us from having in-person classes. Rather than having our traditional “snow days”, these days will now be considered “virtual learning days”.
Schedules for students in our various models will be as follows on these virtual learning days:
- K-12 Online Learning Program - All classes will continue to meet as scheduled based on the Online Learning Program Schedule.
- Elementary Hybrid (Group A & Group B)
- On-site students - On-site students will follow the Online Learning Program/100% Offsite Schedule. The times and Zoom links will be sent to parents by the classroom teacher prior to 8:00 am. (This applies to A students on A days and to B students on B days.)
- Off-site students - Off-site students will log into the morning meeting as scheduled, and complete any asynchronous activities as planned. Off-site students who are receiving synchronous off-site SDI, interventions, or ELL supports will receive those as planned. (This applies to A students on B days and to B students on A days.)
In addition to virtual learning, on days that inclement weather causes hybrid group students to remain at home, (as explained above) the District will provide Grab & Go Meals at the District’s designated sites on these virtual learning days.
