Digital Citizenship Week- #79
Digital Citizenship Week is October 19th- 23rd this school year. It is important for us as teachers to raise awareness of the importance of teaching digital citizenship to students of all ages. As our digital world continues to develop and grow, we must teach our students the importance of leaving a digital footprint and being a good digital citizen. We see the positives of using digital tools- connecting classrooms that are countries apart, collaboration among peers, citing information, using a digital portfolio to obtain a job, etc.; but we also see the negative- court cases, students getting denied to Ivy League Universities, applicable employees getting denied due to social media post, etc. These are just a few topics to be concerned about, but please take time to explore these resources and choose what's best for your students.
I've gathered some resources that I believe to be helpful for you to teach this topic. I know instruction time is short during the day, so spending the first 5 minutes of class each day as a bell ringer, the last 5 minutes of each class one day a week, or when a teachable moment presents itself, teach then. See information below and please let me know if you have any questions or need any help.
Resources for Digital Citizenship
Common Sense Media Lessons
You can sign up for free with Common Sense Media to receive free lessons that contain videos, downloadable PDF curriculum, lesson objectives, materials and preparation, lesson prompts, and the lesson cycle.
With a limited amount of time to teach, consider having a video and/or discussion once a week for the first 5 minutes of class, or consider having a discussion on an announcement within Google Classroom using the essential question.
Check out their new curriculum by clicking on this link and follow Common Sense Media on Twitter- @CommonSense and @CommonSenseEd.

Dr. Kristen Mattson
Dr. Kristen Mattson began as a middle school English teacher who then received her masters and became a librarian. She published "Digital Citzenship in Action" in 2017 and began speaking at educational conferences. I had the opportunity to see her at the Region 11's LibraryiCon. Below is a great blog where she has created and shared several activities about Digital Citizenship.
Geared towards High School students π
- Not enough time in the day? Check out these Bell Ringers.
- Need some ideas for purposeful integration? Try incorporating discussion cards. Check out her 1 minute read here. Don't forget to click on the hyperlink within the blog to access the PDF and the variety of ways she uses the cards.
Wide Open School- Powered by Common Sense
Wide Open School began as a way to meet the change in learning needs of students, teachers, and families due to the coronavirus pandemic. Their website is for parents, caregivers, and teachers to find advice and support during the hybrid learning. Wide Open School is divided into three sections: student activities, family & teacher center, and recursos en espaΓ±ol.
In the Student Activity section, you're able to access Digital Citizenship and filter by the type of lesson and the grade level (Preschool- 12th grade). There are several Digital Citizenship activities that are geared towards family conversation. This is a great tool to send to parents via, Remind, ClassDojo, Google Classroom notifications, etc.

Be Internet Awesome
Be Internet Awesome teaches students (2nd- 6th) the fundamentals of digital citizenship and safety and the curriculum is aligned with both ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) and AASL (American Association of School Librarians) standards. As a teacher, you can download the Be Internet Curriculum that gives you tools and methods necessary to teach digital safety and citizenship fundamentals in the classroom. The Be Internet Curriculum is a collaboration between Google, The Net Safety Collaborative, and the Internet Keep Safe Coalition (iKeepSafe.org). The curriculum uses gamification, Interland (g.co/Interland), an online game that makes learning about digital safety and citizenship interactive and fun. It is recommended that the lessons be taught prior to playing Interland.
The five fundamental topics of digital citizenship and safety are:
- Share with Care
- Don't Fall for Fake
- Secure Your Secrets
- It's Cool to Be Kind
- When in Doubt, Talk It Out
Interland works on any device that has an internet connection and a web browser and Google accounts, logins, passwords, emails are required.
Think about using this as a 'Can Do' when work is completed

Use the link above for students to access. Think about putting this under the Digital Citizenship topic in Google Classroom. Gamification at its best!
Digital Survival Kit Challenge
Information received from Debra Zeman, Library Media Specialist. @DebZemanLMS.
Click Here for information. Have students in groups to explain how each item relates to Digital Citizenship.
- Padlock- Passcode Locks, strong passwords, never save passwords on devices
- Toothbrush- Check social media twice a day like brushing teeth morning and night.
- Permanent Marker- Everything is permanent even when deleted, Favorites, Retweets, Screenshots
- Toothpaste- Once it's out it's impossible to get back in tube; keep it clean, ask permission (Snap Chat) the full tube has high potential and can be used for good but if it is wasted away there will be nothing left to work with then the time comes that you really need it.
- Cotton Ball- Keep your words gentle and kind. If you take the delicate pieces apart your reputation will be left with nothing
- Measuring Tape- Measure the amount of information you share.
π Early Elementary- Don't forget... π
Don't forget about the BrainPop Jr. activities you can print and have your students complete in class or take home to complete with their families.
Common Sense Media For Parents
Parents are also able to look at different topics that might be of concern regarding the digital world, e.g., cellphone use, social media, cyberbullying, technology addiction, and more.
Common Sense Media for parents would be a great resource to send out through Remind101, ClassDojo, Google Classroom, etc.

Common Sense Media Challenge
Our challenge to you is to spend 5 minutes of each class one day a week on a topic in your grade level, take a picture and share it on Facebook or Twitter, and tag Common Sense Media and use the hashtag #mwisdmatters and #DigCit. Don't forget to check and see if your students are allowed to be posted.
Have fun!
