Spring Term 2nd February 2023
Message from the Executive Head Teacher
As we approach the halfway point in the academic year, it's always such a pleasure to see the children of HISN excitedly coming to school and committing to their learning everyday. Coming into school ready to learn is so important, it's a great habit to get into! Recently, year 2 parents have had the opportunity to attend the year 2 showcases and they were so impressed by the progress they saw in the children's books. Year 1 parents should keep a look out for information regarding the showcase for your classes.
As always, the staff continue to work diligently and with real commitment to the children; striving to ensure that all children have the best possible educational experience during the school day. We are always grateful to every parent who works collaboratively with us, supporting the children to do their best and make the most of all the opportunities at HPP.

Message From The Head of School
We have had another busy week here at HISN where every child continues to impress us with their love of learning. I have had the pleasure of spending time in Nursery and Reception this week where the magic all begins. It never ceases to amaze me how embedded routines are in the early stages of education and how much knowledge our youngest children soak up.
Our principle of the week is ‘opportunity’. During our assembly on Wednesday we considered how lucky we are at HISN to be offered so many wonderful opportunities. The children gave some really insightful contributions e.g. clubs, a recent drama workshop, using chrome books in Computing, games in PE as well as opportunities to develop friendships. We compared our school to an outdoor school in Africa where children were so grateful for the opportunity to be educated.
Thank you for your purchases from year group wishlists. Staff and children have been really excited and grateful as gifts have been arriving this week and delivered to classes. Your continued support is really appreciated especially with school budgets being so squeezed.

The Nursery team and children would like to say a BIG THANK YOU for all of the amazing Amazon wish list items we have received recently. The children have absolutely loved using the new resources and have been amazing at taking turns with them too. Thank you for your generosity and for helping us to improve our provision.
Next week we will continue to explore 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. Alongside this we will also learn about internet safety and think about ways to take care of ourselves as part of Mental Health week.
Phonics: Rhyme - we will be playing a game called Rhyming Puppets and encouraging the children to help tell a story by filling in the rhyming words.
Maths: The number three will be our focus and the part-part-whole model and use the following language, "2 is a part of me, 1 is a part of me and the whole of me is 3".
Reception
5,4,3,2,1...blast off! The children have really enjoyed their adventure into space. We have thought carefully about the things we might need on our journey, including a super space suit with a jetpack and oxygen tank with our dogs and teddies to help us drive our rockets!
The children have also been retelling our story of the Week: Whatever Next! and have loved acting it out in the role play area with a colander for a helmet. We have also heard lots of singing voices too as the children belt out the Solar system song and recall lots of interesting facts about the planets.
The children have loved putting their maths thinking caps on and have been brilliant as they use their maths language as they explore height and length. They were super spotters as they compared the length of different sized ribbons and enjoyed discussing who is taller and who is shorter as they compared chalk outlines of each other.
Year 1
English: Year 1 have been looking at various texts and deciding whether these are fiction or non-fiction. We then found out lots of facts about lions and used these to write our very own fact files on lions.
Maths: we have been doubling numbers to 20 and using these to work out near doubles, e.g. if 6 + 6 = 12 then 6 + 5 = 11 and 6 + 7 = 13. We used counters and ten frames to help us and recorded our answers in our books. We have also been using our knowledge of number bonds to help us to subtract one number from another, and using number lines to subtract by counting back.
Science: we have been identifying features of winter, looking at why the trees are bare, weather patterns and why the temperature drops, and how the days are shorter. We thought about what clothes would be best to wear and discussed what months of the year made up the winter season.
History: we continue to look at transport and how this has changed over time. We have been understanding how motor vehicles and trains have evolved over time, discussing which we would prefer to travel in and why.
Year 2
Year 2 has been super busy learning all about multiplication in maths this week. We started by using repeated addition to help us and then we moved onto including the multiplication symbol in number sentences. The children first did this practically, as if they were serving dinner to 'groups of' people and thinking about the language we use when multiplying.
In English, we have been reading 'The Dreamer' by Il Sung Na which tells the story of a pig who dreams of flying. We were inspired by the story and have begun planning our own versions of the story where the pig will learn something new. First we thought about what the pig could learn and described what they would see there. We then moved onto creating a story mountain to include a beginning, build up, dilemma, solution and ending. The children look forward to finishing their stories at the end of this week.
