Grand Avenue Elementary School, Grand Avenue, Prairie du Sac, WI, United States
Grand Avenue 5th grade students will perform on Monday, December 11 at 1:45 pm (dress rehearsal) and at 6:00 pm that evening. The performance is held in the Commons at Grand Ave.
The concert will include all 5th grade classes and also students that participate in the 5th grade chorus.
If you child is in 5th grade, please ask them to dress in their "Sunday Best" for the concert. There will be a note going home with all 5th grade students as the concert draws nearer.
Come and enjoy an evening of singing and dancing and as always, a tradition at Grand Ave., the song, "Must Be Santa" will part of the concert.
LOST & FOUND
The pile of clothes stacking up from items that have been left outside during recess or forgotten in the lunchroom, outside the classroom, etc. is growing even larger. Please ask your child to stop by the lost and found table (outside the bathrooms by the gym) to check if they are missing any items. It really helps if we can keep this pile to a small mountain! Thanks for your help!
HELP (Help Excite Little People)
Grand Avenue Elementary School (in conjunction with First United Church of Christ, Sauk City) is asking for your help! Please consider sharing your gently-used toys or items for teens with those less fortunate. Donations may be brought to the school and dropped in the boxes near the display case by the office. Please drop off your donations to Grand Avenue from Monday, December 4 through Friday, December 8. All items will be distributed in our community!
YOUNG AUTHORS CONTEST
Here’s a wonderful opportunity for talented writers. Students in grades three through five are encouraged to enter the YOUNG AUTHORS CONTEST, which is sponsored by the Gifted and Talented Department. All classroom teachers have information about how to enter the contest, and deadline dates.
There are four categories to enter, and two winners at each grade level in each category will be selected and invited to attend a Young Authors Conference, which is a day-long conference held at the University of Wisconsin, Sauk County/ Baraboo Campus.
The deadline for submitting entries for district judging is January 31, so students wishing to enter should make sure their entries are turned in to their classroom teacher by January 26.
INJURY/ACCIDENT FORMS
AFTERSCHOOL TRANSPORTATION
If your child will have a change regarding someone picking them up, they are biking or walking home, the information can be sent in on a separate note or put in their assignment notebook. We do not need the dismissal change/bus request form filled out for these changes.
If you have questions, please contact the office. Thank you.
GUIDANCE INFO
Counselor Connection
In November, 3rd graders learned about communication. We discussed nonverbal and verbal communication separately; however, we soon realized that neither work well alone. Therefore, we talked about using both types whenever possible. Ask your child about the seven steps to being the best passer and receiver of information, as well as how to use an I-statement.
Fourth graders participated in lessons on conflict resolution. They learned why it is important to think about another person’s perspective, to demonstrate I-Care Listening when someone is trying to communicate with them, and to use I-Statements when discussing a problem with someone to find a compromise in resolving the conflict.
Fifth graders learned about the 6 Errors in Thinking and how they can lead to poor decision making. We also discussed how to resist negative peer pressure now and in the future by setting personal goals. Ask them about their “Wishes for their Future.”
A friendship skills group will be offered for all grade levels in December to address other aspects of friendship. Please let Miss Sadie know if you would like your child to participate in this group.

Ponder Parenting
· If you want your children to succeed, show them how to fail. If you want them to be happy, show them how to be sad. If you want them to be healthy, show them how to be sick. If you want them to have much, show them how to enjoy little. Parents who hide failure, deny loss, and berate themselves for weakness, have nothing to teach their children. But parents who reveal themselves, in all of their humanness, become heroes. For children look to these parents and learn to love themselves. (Martin, William; The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: A New Interpretation, 1999)
E-mail Miss Sadie if you have thoughts or questions about how to accomplish this task.

On days when school is closed, those employees who work when students are in attendance (teachers, aides, etc.) will not be expected to report. Twelve-month employees and administrators will be expected to report as soon as possible.
If a school is closed for reasons other than weather, the day may not be made up. If this is the case, that would be included in the announcement of the closing and teachers would possibly be asked to report to another school for the day. Examples of this type of closing might be by the health official or because of lack of heat or light in the school.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
For example, if your child suffers from migraine headaches, we will NOT be able to distribute medication to him/her without an AMA on file. The AMA form can be found on the District web site. In order for medications to be distributed, pills must be in a prescription bottle with proper labeling. Students may carry inhalers with them, however, an AMA form must be on file in the office.
If you have any questions regarding medication distribution, please contact Laura Cody, RN for the district at 643-5509.
