Montvale Public Schools
Fall 2016: Volume IV Issue I
Superintendent's Message
Dear Montvale Families:
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the summer; one that has been filled with outdoor adventures, relaxing days, a few good books and time with family and friends! This summer, my family had Olympic fever! My 1-year-old, 4-year-old, 6-year-old and 8-year-old have been doing gymnastics, practicing sprints, hitting volleyballs, wrestling, practicing archery (not the safest of activities:)), and more. It has been enjoyable seeing them try new activities. As we approach the start of the school year, it is exciting to think about the opportunities your children will have to actively engage in new learning activities. Children learn by doing and by processing information through problem solving and articulating what they have discovered. We look forward to engaging students in fun and challenging activities.
While we know your children will be involved in our schools, please consider actively participating in our Montvale PTO and Montvale Educational Foundation. Both organizations offer wonderful opportunities for you to work collaboratively to support children. Your involvement will make a difference!
Enjoy the last days of summer! The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 6, 2016. It is an early dismissal - 12:55 p.m.
Respectfully,
Summer Happenings!

Residency Check
As a Montvale resident, your child is entitled to attend the Montvale Schools. When you enrolled your child, you were required to provide documentation proving your residency in the Borough. During the next two months, the district will be conducting a district-wide residency check to better protect the taxpayers in Montvale. If non-resident families attend our schools, this drains resources and is unfair to resident families who pay taxes in Montvale and financially support the school community.
Next week, we will be sending out a formal communication about the re-verification process and documentation required for families with children in grades 1-8. Current kindergarten parents do not have to comply, since you have already supplied the documentation.Special Thanks: Administrative Team & Support Staff

4 Tips for the Start of School from the Bergen County Association of School Administrators (BCASA):
1. A New Year is a Fresh Year
Entering the next grade level offers your child the opportunity to have a fresh start. Use this wisely. Before the school year begins, speak with your child about the successes and struggles of last year, and how this year can be used to make steady and upward improvement. Perhaps a change in study patterns, attending extra help, or more support at home is necessary.
2. An Involved Child is a Successful Student
Research shows that the most highly engaged, successful and satisfied students are those that play a role in the life of the school beyond their classroom studies. Encourage your child to join school clubs or sports teams, volunteer, and be a part of the life of their school. You can set this example by joining your school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, attending school functions, and showing your child what positive and helpful participation looks like.
3. Strive for Balance
Help your child find the appropriate middle ground between taking their studies seriously enough, but not so much that there is a negative impact on their health and wellness. There have been increasing reports of students experiencing high levels of stress due to seemingly unending deadlines and expectations. Using time wisely, not taking on too much outside of school, and finding time to relax are all essential. Keep an eye on your child, and continue to strive for that middle ground.
4. You Set the Greatest Example
As important and vital schools and teachers are in the life of your child, remember that you are your child’s first and most influential teacher. Your words, attitude and actions set your child’s tone and attitude, and it is essential that you support your child’s school experience. Set an example by working closely with teachers, be involved in the life of the school, and continue to remind your child that a strong education is the best ‘insurance policy’ that one can have in an unpredictable world.Montvale Public Library - Open Board Seat
