Principal's Message
Hello and welcome back!
Spring Break was early this year, and thank goodness. We have an exciting month ahead of us, starting with the anticipation for this weekend's Chair-ity Auction. As with every school tradition this year, I am amazed at the overwhelming amount of time and effort our community dedicates to creating events that impact our students. The Chair-ity Auction is no exception. I am looking forward to celebrating these efforts on Saturday at 3:30-7 at Auction. Please come along and bring others, you are not going to believe the items in our raffles and auction this year.
Another part of this month is the state FORWARD test for our third through fifth grade students. This assessment is the basis of the state report card. You might remember back in November when we celebrated the news that Summit View received the score listing us as "Significantly Exceeds Expectations." While assessments only speak to our student's academic achievement and growth in a small way, we encourage their attendance and effort during these testing sections.
Lastly, and definitely not least, April will include the opening of our Student Art Gallery, presented by Mejiers, located in the West lobby. This area was damaged by the flood that occurred in December which resulted in having to empty out the space and start fresh. Our friends at Meijers in Waukesha reached out after hearing about the water damage and offered their financial support to be put towards an area that would be enjoyed by all school partners and visiting community members. This was a no brainer for us! As an arts integrated school we are always searching to showcase our students work. The Gallery includes space to display students 2D, 3D, and digital art work. In addition, comfortable seating and workspaces are available to student groups and visitors to meet and collaborate amongst the art. This Gallery is one of the many silver linings that revealed itself through the flood.
I am looking forward to welcoming April's moments of celebrations with all of you,
Mr. Garrett Sheskey

Sleep/ Bedtime (from our School Psychologist)
Does it seem like there is never enough time for sleep? Did springing ahead throw off sleep routines? Struggling with how to get your kids to go to sleep earlier or better? Kids of elementary school age are recommended on average to get between 9-11 hours of sleep each night in order to be rested and ready for school the next day. Need some ideas? Check out this for information for 5 steps to a positive bedtime routine for kids.
EAT A RAINBOW WEEK- Thank You!
The PTO Wellness Committee, led by Nikki Rees, held the 4th annual “Eat a Rainbow” week
from March 11 – March 15th. Each day of the week a new color was featured. Thanks to a
generous donation from Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee, students sampled red pears, papaya, gold beets, kiwi and eggplant! For 36-99% of students, depending on the fruit or vegetable, it was their first time trying these particular fruits and vegetables! Students learned it can take up to 20 times of trying a new food before deciding they like it. Presenters also suggested preparing a particular vegetable or fruit a different way might make it more appealing. On Wednesday, students attended an assembly where Chef Julie demonstrated how to prepare two recipes, mango salsa and carrot slaw, which students were able to sample. If your child enjoyed the Eat a Rainbow experience, please encourage him or her to send Good Harvest Market a thank you card (mail to: 2205 Silvernail Road, Pewaukee, WI 53072) or stop in and let them know (Ross is the General Manager)! Donations of prizes for the culminating “Eat a Rainbow Challenge” were also generously contributed by the Summit View PTO, Sky Zone and Adventure Rock. There were many individuals who contributed to making the “Eat a Rainbow” experience a success, including:
Parents:
Nikki Rees, Wellness Committee Chair
Jill Burie, Catherine Thomas, Marie Sparks, Katie Lemm, Christina Hampe, Christina Hansen, Ami Maniar, Ben Townsend, Jen Townsend, Andrea Begotka, Brian Corry, Jessie O’Neil, Jenny Stemke, Lisa May, Jen Van Essen, Sara Mulcahy, Jodi Gill, Nicole Schroeder-Peschel, & Alissa Effland.
4th grade students:
Lauren Rees, Ashley Hahn, Noah Ingram, Jackson Meek, Tyler Flemming, Addison Montiho, Mason Lyman, Jackson Gill, Jake Begotka, Derek Mizysak, Ashley Grahovac, Maddie Szalacinski, Aiden Andrade, Kayleigh Seftar, Marilynn McCoy-Sprung, Mason Kwasniewicz, Mariana Figueroa-Paez, Hiba Jama, Nehemiah Fann-Copeland, Anderson Ung, Ollie Corry, Adelle Wang, Ashton Syverson, Camryn Skorno, & Cohen Brown.
Thank you to Mr. Schwartz for coordinating the morning announcements and writing the daily “Eat a Rainbow” broadcasting scripts. Thank you to Mr. Sheskey for preparing and recording cooking and juicing demos for the morning announcements! Thank you to Mrs. Walbert and Mrs. Wanner for integrating the “Eat a Rainbow” theme into the art and music curriculum. Mrs. Smithy also highlighted healthy eating books in the library for students. The PTO Wellness Committee is grateful to all the teaching staff who supported “Eat a Rainbow” week by incorporating healthy eating in their lesson plans and by allotting class time to presenters! It was very rewarding to see the concerted effort students made to pack a rainbow of fruits and vegetables in their lunches and the enthusiasm so many students expressed over the new fruits and vegetables they tried!
Special Project Announcement 2019
One of the amazing things that makes Summit View stand out among other local schools is our willingness to be adaptive to the learning needs of our students. Thank you everyone for your votes and your commitment to our children’s overall learning experience. A special thanks to those involved in raising funds to support our Summit View PTO Special Project! We are thrilled to announce the project that received the highest number of votes (drum roll please)... Agile Learning Spaces! Below is a description of the project and what the funds will go towards:
Imagine a learning space for your child that ignites creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thought. One that provides an inclusive, social, structured and well designed personalized learning experience. Why? Well… why not! We’ve done school in the same way for so long and we know growing up today is different than when we were kids, so… let’s invest in our kids. Together, parents and educators, we can make a direct impact on our child’s learning by being intentional with the items we put into classrooms.
Agile learning spaces will provide students and adults some voice and choice over their environment including what types of furniture to put into the classroom. Maybe your child would like to learn using a dry erase table that flips up to be a presentation board because he gets nervous when asked to stand up in the front of the room to present an idea. Or, maybe your child would like a grass dome seating option to bring the outdoors into the classroom. How about a wobble board that provides some movement to increase the blood flow to the brain or a rocker ottoman seat that can be used in more than just one way? By having options for students in their classrooms we can support brain stimulation, focus, and learning, especially for students who sometimes require just a little bit more but feel too different or don’t want to leave the classroom to get what they need. This project will support us in creating inclusive as well as agile learning spaces for all kids.
Sincerely,
Summit View 2019 PTO Board Members
