Tips from the Counselors
We want your child to be successful in school, and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, students also need skills for learning challenges, making good decisions, handling strong emotions, and getting along with others. This week, we’ll begin Second Step® Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include: Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives. Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment. Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress. Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict. If you have any questions about Second Step® Middle School, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.
Sincerely,
JN21

Olympian and Spartan Teams
Hello from the 6th-grade teachers!
We hope by now you are settled into the routine of school. It is always hard to get back into things, but always rewarding when we do. We are excited to be back for another year and have enjoyed getting to know our new students. It has been amazing to see them getting over the initial worries and fears of the middle school transition and learning, working hard, and taking on more responsibility for themselves and their learning.
In the 6th grade, the advisory teachers will be checking grades for their advisory students every Friday. Our goal is to help our students become aware of their work habits and help them be responsible for their assignments. This is our missing work policy.
- Advisory teachers will print out a list of any missing assignments and give it to their advisory students. If they have missing work, they need to talk to the teacher to get the assignment completed and turned in by Wednesday the following week. If they do not have missing work, they will not have to worry about this.
- Once the assignment is complete and turned in, the student must have the teacher sign their missing work paper, so the advisory teacher knows it is taken care of for the week. When they are all signed off, they will give this missing work paper to the advisory teacher.
- If a student forgets to do this or loses their missing work paper, they will have a 30-minute detention time with their advisory teachers so we can help them get caught up.
If you have any questions, please email or call the school to speak to your child’s advisory teacher.
Voyagers Team
Welcome to all of our new Voyager students and families. We are so excited to have you here with us. Just a few reminders: there is no gum, earbuds, or iWatches allowed. All cell phones must be kept in backpacks or left with advisory teachers. We encourage your students to carry a clear (not tinted) water bottle. Some of the tings your student will be learning this month are: Map Skills, Proportional Relationships, Properties of Matter, and Essay writing Skills.
Odyssey Team
- In science, Mr. Varner's students will be learning about the physical and chemical properties of matter.
- Students will explore these topics through labs experiments.
- Our ELA teachers Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Rodriguez will lead students into studying unit 5- facing adversity.
- we will be discussing the questions about encountering obstacles and over coming adversity. This unit includes stories about the dust bowl, Helen Keller and many more.
- Ms. Figueroa's Math will be doing Module 1 - Identifying and Representing Proportional Relationships
- Miss. Johnston's Social Studies will learn about physical geography. This includes landforms, bodies of water, weather, climate, and natural resources.
- In Ms. Camacho's Connect class, students will be creating virtual lockers, getting Xello presentations ready for parent/teacher conferences, and digital citizenship: the digital footprints they leave behind in the digital world.
Allstar Team
The All-Star team would like to welcome everyone back to school and looks forward to a great year. Please ensure you are signed up for Talking Points to receive team news and information.
Defenders
We are so excited to inform you that we have had a very successful first couple weeks and have really enjoyed getting to know our students! We are positive that it is going to be a great year! We wanted to share a few important items that we’ve already gone over with our students, but thought parents would also appreciate being informed of.
Missing assignment plan: In order to help all of our students stay on track and keep caught up on work, we will be printing missing assignments each Monday during advisory and giving those to students. If your child is missing three or more assignments we will be sure to send out a talking points message so that you are aware. Students will be responsible for completing missing work and returning the missing assignment sheet to their Advisory teacher by Friday. If work is not complete by Friday, the student will need to make arrangements to stay after school the following Monday so that we may help them complete any late work. We are implementing this policy in order to ensure that all of our students are successful and staying caught up on classwork.
Snacks/Water bottles: Students are welcome to bring healthy snacks and water to school. Water must be in a clear bottle or container and all snacks must meet the health plan. No chips, cookies, candy etc…Also, no gum please. Some healthy snack ideas include yogurt, fruit, pretzels, fruit snacks, dry cereal, granola bars.
Phones/air pods: Students are asked to either put phones in their advisory teacher’s lock box or keep them powered off in their backpack. They may not have them out or in a pocket during school. If they do not keep them put away, phones will be taken to the office for parents to pick up after school. Air pods also must be kept in a backpack unless permission is given by the teacher to use for activities in the classroom. No airpods may be worn outside of the classroom.
Trail Blazers Team
This year the Trailblazers come to us from the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Their native languages are Spanish, K’iche, or Aguacateco.
Explorers Team
- General Music is busy learning how to play the Ukulele.
- In Choir at the moment other than diving into Sight Singing… our Concert is in December.

Security Procedures
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective. As many of you know, our school has a security camera, intercom, and buzzer at the front entrance for use during the school day. To help us assist you when you would like to enter the school:
1. Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
2. You will be asked to give your name and reason for visiting
3. Office staff will then be able to buzz you inside
4. All visitors must immediately register in the office
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (and they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students at DCMS safe.
