In this three-day course, participants will collaboratively engage in tasks that illustrate important components of proportional reasoning, the development of ideas across grades, and typical misconceptions that become barriers to understanding.

Instructional Strategies to Support ALL Learners
Participants will have opportunities to experience and dialogue around
- instructional strategies to support ALL students in sense making,
- number talks and number strings,
- multiple representations and problem solving approaches, and
- conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
Time to Explore Proportional Reasoning on PSAT/SAT Items
Participants will have opportunities to explore ways in which proportional reasoning is assessed on the SAT suite of assessments and/or how students can use proportional thinking as tools in problem solving.
Important Details
Who: Proportional reasoning is grounded in 6-8th grade standards. Therefore, the primary audience for this learning experience is 6th-8th grade general education and special education teachers. However, teachers interested in seeing the progression from 4th and 5th grades or up into Algebra 1 are also welcome to attend.

Geraldine Devine
Geraldine is a mathematics education consultant for Oakland Schools. Prior to becoming a consultant, she taught mathematics for seventeen years ranging from 6th grade math to AP Calculus.
Geraldine enjoys learning with colleagues especially exploring instructional strategies that have the most potential to increase students' self image as a learner and overall achievement.
