REFLECTOR TAPE
With the onset of winter and shorter daylight hours, pedestrian safety is once again an important issue for Anchorage youth. Safe Kids Alaska at Providence Hospital has provided reflective tape for students to adhere to their clothing or backpacks.
The purpose of this tape is to make children more visible in the dark and help them to be seen. The overall goal is to keep our kids safe. Youth tend to underestimate the speed of cars, and overestimate the ability of a driver to see them in the dark. Using reflective material is an important tool for increasing visibility and safety of children
Please find the strip of reflective tape attached to a letter from Principal Carrolll and Nurse Jan in your student's Monday folder for your use. After the reflector tape has been applied to your child’s winter coat or a backpack, have your child stop by the office to show Mrs. Carroll or Nurse Jan. Once we confirm that your child has reflective tape on, we will enter their name in a drawing to win one of two $10.00 Barnes & Noble gift cards on Friday, Nov. 15th.

Entrance to King Tut’s tomb discovered
On Novermber 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.
When Carter first arrived in Egypt in 1891, most of the ancient Egyptian tombs had been discovered, though the little-known King Tutankhamen, who had died when he was 18, was still unaccounted for. After World War I, Carter began an intensive search for “King Tut’s Tomb,” finally finding steps to the burial room hidden in the debris near the entrance of the nearby tomb of King Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings.
Abraham Lincoln Elected President
On Nov. 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates: Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois.
Jeannette Rankin becomes first U.S. Congresswoman
On Nov. 7, 1916, Montana suffragist Jeannette Rankin is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the first woman in the history of the nation to win a seat in the federal Congress.
Born and raised on a ranch near Missoula, Montana, Rankin was the daughter of progressive parents who encouraged her to think beyond the narrow sphere of opportunities generally permitted to women of the early 20th century. After graduating from the University of Montana and the New York School of Philanthropy, Rankin worked briefly as a social worker before becoming active in the national effort to win women the vote. In 1914, her efforts brought her back to Montana, where she believed pioneer conditions had created greater respect for women’s work and abilities, making it somewhat easier to convince men to grant them the right to vote. Indeed, other western states like Wyoming and Colorado had already approved women’s suffrage years before, and Rankin’s leadership helped Montana join them in 1914.
German scientist discovers X-rays
On Nov. 8, 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923) becomes the first person to observe X-rays, a significant scientific advancement that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible visible. Rontgen’s discovery occurred accidentally in his Wurzburg, Germany, lab, where he was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemically coated screen. He dubbed the rays that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown nature.
East Germany opens the Berlin Wall
On Nov. 9, 2989, East German officials today opened the Berlin Wall, allowing travel from East to West Berlin. The following day, celebrating Germans began to tear the wall down.
One of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War was soon reduced to rubble that was quickly snatched up by souvenir hunters. The East German action followed a decision by Hungarian officials a few weeks earlier to open the border between Hungary and Austria. This effectively ended the purpose of the Berlin Wall, since East German citizens could now circumvent it by going through Hungary, into Austria, and thence into West Germany.
