New Instructional Calendar is Approved for 2020-21 School Year
Parents and guardians, please be advised that our Board of Trustees approved our new instructional calendar on Thursday. This revised calendar is designed to give us the flexibility to deal with potential COVID-19 disruptions or closures.
The approved calendar most closely matches the recommended intersessional option proposed by TEA, with students starting in August and having longer breaks around Thanksgiving, in the winter and in the spring. The last day of instruction will be June 25 for all grades except seniors, who would finish on May 28.
Specifically, the first day of the new school year will remain Aug. 17, with intersessional breaks scheduled for Oct. 5-9, Nov. 16-20, Jan. 4-8 and March 8-12. All of those breaks are set to occur around regularly scheduled vacation times, except for the week in October. The built-in breaks give the district more options to cover required instructional time. For instance, if a COVID-19 closure period was needed in the fall or early winter, one of the planned intersessional breaks later in the year could be used to recoup instructional time.
During those COVID-19 breaks, seniors will continue remote learning at home, which will give them the required instructional time to graduate by the end of May – the same as with a traditional calendar. To see the complete calendar, please visit: www.springisd.org/calendar
Summer Learning
In light of ongoing health and safety concerns related to the pandemic, we have redesigned summer school into an online experience available to ALL students and taillored to meet specific instructional needs.
Specifically, we will be hosting two Summer Learning At-Home sessions to run Monday through Thursday with the first scheduled for June 10-30 and the second to run July 7-28.
For students requiring grade-level support in order to be ready for the next school year, the sessions will include targeted tutorials in reading/literacy as well as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). For students looking for additional learning opportunities, we will be offering different enrichment camps depending on their grade level, including AP boot camp, GT camp, STEAM Camp and Literacy Camp.
We will be sending out more information about these offerings with specific guidance on what programs might best meet the needs of your student. If you’re thinking of participating in ANY of these programs, please do not turn in your district-issued Chromebook. You are invited to keep it until the end of our summer school sessions.
Social Distancing Should not mean social Isolation
Young children need to have quality time with their caregivers and other important people in their lives. Social connectedness improves children’s chances of showing the ability to cope with difficulties and overcoming obstacles regardless of the situation.
Here are some creative approaches to staying connected during this time of self-distancing:
● Using online video chats with friends, and family members outside the immediate home
● Writing letters to friends and family members
● Playing online video games with friends
● Playing board/ and card games
● Cooking and baking together
● Writing a thank you letter to your postman and leaving it in your mailbox for them
We are Here for You!
We know this can be a difficult and stressful time for our knights. If your student is in need of counseling services, please fill out the counselor request form and our school counselor, Casey Grimme, will get back to you.

FREE MEALS AVAILABLE TO SPRING ISD STUDENTS
Starting Monday, April 13, Spring ISD will implement changes to its free meal distribution program to better serve families and staff during the extended COVID-19 closure.
The district will now be handing out packets of multiple-day meals on Mondays and Wednesdays only.
On Monday, families will pick up meals for Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesdays, they will receive meals for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
“We’re making this change to minimize the number of family trips to schools and ensure we do our part to “Stay Home, Stay Safe” as ordered by state and local officials,” said Chief Operations Officer Mark Miranda. “Fewer trips will be more convenient for our families.”
Because larger kitchens and food storage are needed to accommodate this change,
the morning curbside meal schedule continues from 10 to 12 a.m. at the following school sites:
● Bailey Middle,3377 James C. Leo Dr. (Starts Monday, March 30)
● Booker Elementary, 22352 Imperial Valley Dr., Houston
● Clark Primary, 12625 River Laurel Dr., Houston
● Claughton Middle, 3000 Spears Rd., Houston
● McNabb Elementary, 743 East Cypresswood Dr., Spring
● Reynolds Elementary, 3975 Gladeridge Dr., Houston
● Westfield High, 16713 Ella Blvd, Houston
Evening curbside meal pick up from 4 to 6 p.m.
● Bailey Middle, 3377 James C. Leo Dr. Spring
● Claughton Middle, 3000 Spears Rd., Houston
● Westfield High, 16713 Ella Blvd, Houston
In another change, families will have the option of just popping their trunks so the meals can be placed inside. District officials remind families that meals are available to all children 18 years and younger but they must be present in the vehicle to receive them.
Empowered Learning at home packets will be handed out on WEDNESDAYS ONLY at the these locations.
Additional Information and resources for our families
Some Spring ISD students may qualify to receive the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT), a one-time benefit of up to $285 to be issued on an EBT card to assist during the district’s closure.
This benefit was approved by the United States Department of Agriculture to help eligible families buy food for their students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The EBT card can be used like a debit card to buy food from any retailer that accepts the Texas Lone Star Card.
If any of the following circumstances apply to your children, they may be eligible for this benefit:
- Children who received SNAP food stamp benefits for March 2020.
- Children who are approved free or reduced-price meals during the 2019-20 school year.
- Children who attend a school that offers free meals to all students.
If your family meets one of the above requirements, here are next steps:
- Families who received SNAP benefits in the month of March 2020 for children ages 5 - 18 will automatically receive the P-EBT benefit on their EBT card. You do not need to apply.
- Qualifying families that must apply online:
- If you have children under the age of 5 or children between the ages of 19 and 21, who received SNAP benefits in March, you must apply online for P-EBT.
- If you have children up to 21 years old who received free or reduced meals at school based on the approval of a free/reduced meal application, you must apply online for P-EBT.
Application Information:
- Spring ISD will receive a link for the application. This link is not yet available to us but when we receive it, we will share with all eligible families.
- Families will have until June 30, 2020 to complete and submit the application.
- Once approved, a P-EBT card will be mailed to your household.
- Families will have one year to use P-EBT food benefits. Benefits are non-transferrable.
For more information, please visit hhs.texas.gov/PEBT. A P-EBT call center will be available in June when the application is available.
