St. André Bessette Catholic School
February 22-26, 2021
This past week we've transitioned from ordinary time to the season of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday last week we treated our students to a cookie and juice box snack and reminded them of the significance of Shrove Tuesday. It was a little unusual stepping away from our traditional pancake service but all the same we rewarded our students in community with their classmates of the unique religious significance of this day. The next day we shared with each class a special Ash Wednesday liturgy. Staff videotaped parts of the liturgy ahead of time and it was complete with a homily from Fr Kris. While COVID has changed how we started our Lenten journey it has not and will not change the chance to prepare our hearts for Jesus through acts of fasting, prayer and almsgiving.
This weekend's gospel is unique as it the first time that Mark quotes Jesus directly. He is exclaiming that the kingdom of God has come. Jesus' message is to repent and believe in the salvation that is now here. To "believe" and to "repent" go hand in hand. It is impossible to fully believe in Jesus' message of salvation and not turn away from our sins (1 John 3:4–6). Christians will never be perfect on this earth, but our inclination to live a sinful life changes into a desire to live for God. Fortunately we have a Lenten season to help us to reflect on what we can improve and start fresh.
