A Message From WLCSD
Dear Parents:
On this last day of the 2019-2020 school year, I want to express, humbly, my gratitude to our Walled Lake Schools families and community. Your support as we conclude 13 weeks of virtual learning, celebrate our seniors, and so much more, has reminded us to value compassion over challenge and to persevere. Thank you too for your overwhelming response to the Planning for 20/21 Parent Survey. We are reading and considering all feedback as we convene committees to create a plan to serve Every Child, Every Day next year.
Survey: Today is the deadline to complete this planning survey. Submissions will be accepted through midnight tonight, June 12, 2020.
Retrieval of student belongings:
- Elementary: Thank you to our parents for doing a curb-side pick-up this week. It was great to see our children’s faces.
- Middle School: Pick-up and drop-off of school items, such and band instruments, media center books, and athletic uniforms will take place, June 12- 12-5, and June 15 and 16 – 8-4. You must sign up with the forms that have been emailed to you from your principal.
- High School: Please see the communication from your principal as this will be done next week.
- Chromebook return.
Social Justice in Walled Lake Schools: Please see Superintendent Gutman’s Message on 6/3
Budget: As I have noted in the past several District Updates, we are preparing a budget that includes sweeping reductions. This is the June 2020 Budget video that outlines the proposed reductions, though we have not yet been told what dollars will be available for next year. . We respectfully request that you advocate for unrestricted and federal funds with our federal legislators as Michigan’s budget woes will result in significant cuts to schools’ budgets. Here are some important talking points about school funding. I want to remind all parents that bond funds may only be used for the specified, approved bond work. Lastly, please log onto the WLCSD Citizen’s Committee Facebook page and Our Kids, Our Future – Contact Congress to help us send a message to our legislators.
Congratulations to:

Other updated information:
- Thank you for your patience in receiving the 2020/21 WLCSD School Calendar.
- Please encourage your children to participate in the WLCSD Virtual Field Day.
- Summer Care: With the Governor’s Stay at Home Executive Order in place until mid-June, WLCSD will not be offering Summer Care for 2020. This is a difficult decision but with the uncertainty of the COVID virus, it is the safe and prudent course to take at this time. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause but we hope to see your children this Fall when school resumes.
- Food Distribution will continue until Monday, June 22. Other food distribution sites include:
- North Oakland County Food Distribution
- South Oakland County Food Distribution
- Hospitality House Food Pantry
- Virtual Kindergarten Orientation: Visit our Virtual Kindergarten Orientation process and the fully virtual enrollment process District Enrollment Link.
We are committed to communicating what we know, when we know it. Thank you for your partnership in supporting our children and each other. Please be safe and let us know how we can help you at info@wlcsd.org.
Have a safe and restful summer,
Kenneth Gutman
Superintendent of Schools
