What is the SAMR Model?- #63
What is the SAMR Model?
I like to think of the SAMR model as Bloom's Taxonomy for technology. The SAMR model has four different categories for classroom technology integration. The acronym, SAMR stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.
The SAMR model offers a method of seeing how instructional technology might impact teaching and learning. While we often visualize this model as a ladder, it can be misleading, because Substitution and Augmentation might be the best choice for a lesson. While we want our instructional technology use to head into the Modification and Redefinition categories, in fact, great teachers hit every category from time-to-time.
Substitution
Examples...
- Paper and pencil essay to a Google Doc
- Atlas (locating) ---> Google Earth (locating)
- Paper and pencil story ---> Book Creator
- Concept map demonstrating understanding of properties of matter ---> Lucidchart
Augmentation
Examples...
- Google Doc ---> text-to-speech (recording)
- Google MyMaps ---> add information
- Book Creator ---> add voice
- Lucidchart ---> links and illustration
Modification
Examples...
- Google Doc with recording shared with peers for immediate feedback to allow editing and revising
- Google MyMaps ---> shared with peers to allow immediate feedback and a deeper understanding of the concept.
- Book Creator ---> shared with peers to allow immediate feedback and a deeper understanding of the concept.
- Lucidchart ---> posted on a blog to allow reflection and comments for editing and discussion.
Redefinition
Examples...
- Google Doc ---> video production or Google Site
- Google MyMaps ---> an Adobe Spark Page to demonstrate the understanding of the different locations- informational
- Book Creator ---> green screen production
- Lucidchart ---> students use Minecraft EDU to model three states of matter and can be recorded for reflection.
