PRAIRIE POST
March 6, 2020
Message from the Principal
Hello Prairie Families,
We celebrated Read Across America at Prairie this week. Students read with buddy classes, participated in an all-school read in, decorated doors to show our love for reading, and I had the opportunity to read with every classroom! It was a fun-filled week where we were able to celebrate our love for reading.
Have a great weekend!

Communicable Disease Messages from Deputy Superintendent
March 5, 2020 - Letter 2
Dear Families,
Due to the increase in reported cases of influenza and the media attention given to the coronavirus (COVID-19) recently, we have sent out several different communications to staff and families. One was sent on February 28, 2020, and another sent earlier today. Please read those communications so you are aware how we are monitoring the situation and working to maintain the health and safety of all students and staff.
Additionally, Spring Break and another long weekend are around the corner. The CDC has several Warning Level 3 areas which states that travelers avoid all nonessential travel. We are urging families and employees to follow the CDC recommendations, which may include self-quarantine, depending on the region of the world visited. If you are traveling to an identified at risk region, you are to follow the CDC guidelines upon your return. You can access information from the CDC at https://www.cdc.gov/ and travel alerts at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/. Please understand that travel to certain areas may require quarantine upon return and that the CDC and World Health Organization are monitoring and updating travel alerts daily. Be sure to follow the district Too Sick for School Guidelines referenced in today’s earlier letter should your child need to stay home to due illness or potential illness.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. The District is monitoring this situation closely, following the guidance of national, state and local agencies, and will take all necessary steps to ensure the health of our students and staff. Please do not reply directly to this email as it is being sent from an unmonitored account.
Sincerely,
Joe Koch, PhD
Deputy Superintendent
School District of Waukesha

March 5, 2020 - Letter 1
Dear Families and Staff:
Last week we communicated information to you regarding our efforts to address communicable diseases and suggestions for you to implement in your home. Part of that message is repeated here.
Due to the increase in reported cases of influenza and the media attention given to the coronavirus (COVID-19) recently, we are reaching out to families to share recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for keeping your family safe and healthy, and preventing the spread of communicable illnesses. Additionally, we are writing to let you know of the steps we are taking as a district to minimize the impact of communicable diseases.
First, the CDC is recommending the following actions to prevent infection:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home when you are sick
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then discard tissue in trash
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
In addition, please help us prevent the spread of illness in our schools by reviewing the district’s “Too Sick For School” guidelines, and keeping your child home when they are ill. As a reminder, the “Too Sick For School” guidelines require that your child be vomit-free, diarrhea-free, and fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for 24 hours before they return to school. A fever is defined by the district as a temperature greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit when taken orally.
Too Sick for School Guidelines- ENGLISH
Secondly, the district is taking the following steps to monitor absenteeism and increase our cleaning efforts.
Attendance at each school location is being monitored daily to look for patterns of increased illness
The district nursing staff, attendance staff, and technology department are working on specific absence codes to address excused absences for illness that allow us to monitor the symptoms causing the illness
The district facilities department has purchased additional cleaning supplies to disinfect our school locations
The district facilities department is prepared to deploy additional custodial staff to school locations that are reporting higher absenteeism due to illness.
It is important to note that the district has already implemented several steps including increased cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in recent months due to our monitoring of Influenza and other illnesses.
Please do not reply directly to this email as it is being sent from an unmonitored account.
If you have further questions, please reach out to the Waukesha County Public Health Department at 262-896-8430 or access their website at https://www.waukeshacounty.gov/publichealth.
Sincerely,
Joe Koch, PhD
Deputy Superintendent
