Media Center Reading Challenge
March is Reading Month Reading Challenge
Gene Yuen Lang is the National Ambassador for Reading for Young People’s Literature. This is his program to challenge young readers to try different kinds of books.
1. Read a book with someone on the cover who doesn’t look like you or live like you. Books are a great way to get to know people who are different from us. By reading other people’s stories, we can develop insight and compassion.
Reflection: How was someone in the book different from you?
2. Read a book about a topic that you find intimidating. My pet project in this area is promoting books about science, technology, engineering, and math. Often, people think of stories and science as completely separate, but they’re not. Stories are a great way to learn science.
Reflection: What subject did you read about? What are two facts you learned?
3. Read a book in a format that you’ve never tried before. If you only read books with words, give a graphic novel a try. If you only read graphic novels, try a prose novel, a novel in verse, or a hybrid (half graphic, half prose) novel.
Reflection: What format was the book? Would you read another book in that format?
We are going to do this program at Dublin this year. Read (or be read to) one book from each category. Fill out the reflection for each book. Have a parent sign the bottom and return the form to the Media Center by April 5. All forms will be entered into a drawing for prizes!
Any questions, please email Mrs. Entwistle @tinaentwistle@wlcsd.org
Check the Media Center website for ideas for books in each category or for more forms.

Random Acts of Kindness Project
To celebrate and encourage kindness and integrity throughout the Dublin Community, we will be participating in the National Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 12-18.
We will be recognizing this important week all month by encouraging students to pay it forward with a special random act of kindness. In an effort to see our ripples of kindness, students will each be given one Random Acts of Kindness Card (attached) to pass out to the person they have paid it forward to. Recipients can communicate what kindness they received and we will be tracking it on our Random Acts of Kindness bulletin board. Of course, we encourage and hope for many acts of kindness towards others. Hopefully, this card will provide students with a way to get started.
An act of kindness can be big or small. Some ideas might include: helping a neighbor with their groceries, shoveling a driveway, walking a dog, holding the door open for strangers, helping a younger sibling, etc. We only ask that the kindness be shared outside of Dublin Elementary. We hope to engage White Lake and neighboring communities with our Random Acts of Kindness project.
Thank you for continued support,
The Dublin Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Committee
Fifth Grade Camp Update
Some questions have come up about fifth grade camp and I thought I might answer them for you here.
We will have a Fifth Grade Parent Camp Meeting on Tuesday, February 28th from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Media Center at Dublin.
During this meeting the fifth grade teachers and I will show you a video presentation with all the information needed for camp. We will also answer any questions you may have. At the meeting you will receive a packet of information to look through with some forms you will need to complete.
If you cannot make this information meeting, we will send home the information packet with your child at school the next day.
Here are some camp facts you can start to think about:
At this time we are scheduled to go to Fifth Grade Camp, Wednesday, March 29th through Friday, March 31st. Students will be dropped off at Dublin that Wednesday in the cafeteria and will be picked up at Dublin on Friday, March 31st at 11:30 AM. The students will need transportation to and from school on each of these days.
We have 108 fifth graders this year! Because of the high number, we will need to get an idea how many students may NOT be spending the night. The Outdoor Center has a cap on how many students may sleep over. This is why the fifth grade teachers sent a note home asking parents about this, to get a good idea of numbers. If needed, we may have to split our fifth grade group into two groups and have some go Monday through Wednesday and the rest go Wednesday through Friday. Please let your child's teacher know asap about this. Students may spend the night, students may go and be picked up before bed time and return to camp the next day. That is up to you and your family.
The cost for the 2.5 days of camp per child is $138.00. If you have a second child going, the cost for the second child is $108.00. Families must pay these costs even if your child does not spend the night.
There will be an opportunity for parents to volunteer to help out at camp. A sign up will be sent to parents electronically after our camp parent meeting on the 28th.
Medications and special needs are handled just like they are here at school.
If you have questions about meals/food, you may call the Outdoor Center and they can help. We adjust meals for students with specific allergies, etc.
If you may be in need of financial assistance to go to camp, please email me or send a written note/letter in with your child to give to me. I will communicate with you about this. There is some scholarship money available to help families in need.
Our teachers spend the night out at camp too for supervision.
We hope this answers some of your basic questions about camp at this time.
Book Drive
We will be hosting Dublin’s Reading Night on Thursday, March 9th. One of our activities will be a Book Walk. Winners of the Book Walk will be able to select a book to take home and enjoy. How can you help?
Dublin Elementary will be hosting a Book Drive for the rest of February and early March. We will be collecting any new or “gently” used books to use in our Book Walk. All types of books are welcome from preschool to fifth grade.
When you are going through your child’s bookshelves and come across books that are no longer age appropriate or being read, don’t forget us! Your child’s beloved books will become someone else’s new favorite. Dig under your bed, in your basement, and in your closet for your old and used books to donate!
Please bring your donated books to Dublin starting next week. We will have tubs in the office and locations around the school to collect your book donations.
Thank you for supporting the love of reading!

Kindergarten Orientation 2017
Incoming kindergarten parents for the 2017-2018 school year are cordially invited to attend the Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, March, 14, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at each of our elementary schools.
Kindergarten Information
Incoming kindergartners must be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2017.
Exception: According to Michigan Law, a child may be enrolled in kindergarten
if he/she is not five years of age on September 1, 2017 but will be five years of
age not later than December 1, 2017 and parent or legal guardian notifies the school
district in writing (Kindergarten Waiver Form) that he or she intends to enroll the
child in kindergarten.
Research indicates that developmentally appropriate full-day schedules benefit kindergarten children academically, socially and emotionally. Our principals and teachers understand this and are well equipped to meet the needs of our kindergarten students.
Our kindergarten students begin to learn a whole host of reading, writing and mathematics concepts and learning strategies that give them the foundation for a successful elementary school career in Walled Lake Schools.
Kindergarten Vision Screen Available
Please call the Oakland County Health Department at 248-424-7070 to schedule an appointment.
