PRAIRIE POST
November 15, 2019
Message from the Principal
Hello Prairie Families,
It was a great week at Prairie! This week we're celebrating a school board presentation, growth on our state report card and Veteran's Day. Classes celebrated our veterans in several different ways throughout the week. To highlight a few... second grade worked together to create a puzzle that revealed a picture of a veteran (below) and then they learned more about how veterans play a special role in our community. Kindergarten learned about who veterans are and what they do. Then they created soldiers to show what they learned (below).
State report cards were released this week. In 2017-2018 Prairie received a score of 68.8 and landed in the "Meets Expectations" category. In 2018-2019 Prairie received a score of 74.7 and landed in the "Exceeds Expectations" category. This is an increase to celebrate! Based on the 2018-2019 district report card, the School District of Waukesha was #3 in comparison to the 10 largest school districts in the state.
On Wednesday a team of Prairie educators and students presented to the school board to highlight our work around social-emotional learning. We taught the school board about Second Step, Zones of Regulation and Playworks. We even taught them a strategy from our Zen Zones called "Belly Breathing." Everyone at the school board meeting joined us in taking three belly breaths to prepare for the remainder of the meeting.
Report cards will be coming out at the end of the first trimester. Please view this "IC Parent Information 2019-2020" document to learn more about how to view your child's progress.
This year we are hosting three music concerts throughout the year. Please mark your calendars for the following dates so that you are able to listen to our talented musicians:
- 4th & 5th Grade: December 17th at 6:30pm
- 2nd & 3rd Grade: March 3rd at 6:30pm
- Kindergarten & 1st Grade: May 27th at 6:00pm
More specific information around concerts will be shared with the families of students in these grade levels as the various concerts approach.
Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Lorenz
I am excited to be in my 3rd year teaching 4K here at Prairie! Prior to Praire, I taught at two other SDW schools and have spent 15 years working in the early childhood field. In addition to teaching our littlest learners, I am one of the advisors for Prairie’s 4th and 5th student council. I recently finished my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through UW-Whitewater and am already looking into my next learning experience!
I live in Lisbon with my husband and our 2 children, Oliver (11) and Poppy (9). When I am not teaching, I can often be found gardening, camping, reading or watching my children participate in swimming, tennis, and scouting.
I feel so blessed to be part of the Prairie community. I am thankful for all of the support given to me by the staff, students and families here at Prairie Elementary
