WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON:
Fifth Grade: Fifth grade artists have been working on a printing project based on the work of Pop artist Andy Warhol. To start the project artists used a Chromebook app to alter a photograph of themselves. The goal of altering the photo was to increase the contrast so that is was all black and white without any greys. Then artists transferred the photo to a printing block. We use a material that is similar to a rubber eraser, instead of the hard linoleum that is used by more advanced artists. Next, they removed the negative space, or white space of the image using Linozip carving tools. Before printing, artists selected colors that fit into monochromatic and complementary color schemes and then printed 3 final prints using contrasting colors from these schemes. The final prints will be on display at Grand and at the River Arts Center during the Youth Art Month show.
Third Grade: In February, third grade artists started a flower weaving on a round loom. They started the project by creating a flower shaped loom. Then selected a complementary or analogous color scheme for weaving. Artists learned about four different weaving styles and had to select at least two to use on their flower. The final step will be to color the petals of the loom with markers. The flowers will be on display at the River Arts Center during the Youth Art Month show.
Music
Our third graders have been working on our Musical "Science Rocks" which will be performed on March 14th.
The fourth graders are continuing to work on their recorder unit. This past month we have learned 2 new notes, C and E.
The fifth graders have also been working on their recorder unit. We have been playing 2 part songs in duets with one another. We also continue to hone in on our sight reading skills as we practice singing in solfege.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Jump Rope for Heart:
Our school is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association and educate students about the importance of Heart Health. We’re joining the fight against our nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers — heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope for Heart is a fun event that helps our children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives. Our efforts truly make a difference! This year we will be jumping in honor of, Ellie Setterlund, a student at Grand Avenue who has been personally affected by heart disease.
If you choose to fund raise please return envelopes by March 11th. Remember the fundraising part is optional, all students will be jumping during their PE classes because of the educational and physical activity aspects of the event.
