SCIENCE ROCKS MUSICAL PERFORMED BY 3RD GRADE STUDENTS
The 3rd grade students from Grand Avenue performed the musical "Science Rocks" on Monday, March 14 at 1:45 and 6:00 pm for the school student body, parents, families and friends. These students did an amazing job with their parts and singing the songs from the musical. Congratulations to all of the students for this fantastic job!
6TH GRADE IMMUNIZATIONS
Dear Parents,
The state requirement for 6th grade students is to have a Tdap booster (if they have not already received it). If your child has not yet received this, please make an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider to complete this prior to the start of the 2016-17 school year. If your child will be receiving the vaccination during the summer, please bring a copy of the updated records to the nurses table at school registration. If your child has an immunization waiver on file for personal, medical, or religious reasons that should also be updated. A student immunization waiver can be found on the school website under “health forms” or can be picked up from any school office. Please contact the Nurses’ office at 643-5509 (fax 608-643-5503) if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Pam Frey
District Nurse
SOUP LABELS
If you have been donating the Campbell's soup labels over the years, thank you very much. We have been notified that they will no longer be doing this program, so if you do have soup labels at your house and plan to turn in, please do so by Friday, May 13. Thank you!
NURSES INFO
Head Lice
Lice are small insects about the size of a sesame seed. They are usually light brown but can vary in color. They move quickly and shy away from light, making them difficult to see. It helps to use a magnifying glass and natural light when looking for lice. Nits (eggs) are tiny, yellowish-white oval droplets attached to hair shafts; they do not come off easily and have to be combed out with a special comb or manually removed. Nits can be found throughout the hair, but are most often located at the nape of the neck, behind the ears, and frequently on the top of the head.
The CDC states, “Head lice can be a nuisance but they have not been shown to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.” Additionally, lice are not likely to be spread in a classroom setting as usually they are spread by direct head-to-head contact. Regular screenings at home can help prevent the spread of head lice. Please check your child weekly for head lice. When lice are discovered, you may want to contact your child’s physician or pharmacist regarding treatment. Following a treatment, it is important to comb through the hair for 7-10 days. During this time lice can be removed manually or with a special comb. A second treatment may be necessary if nits or live lice are still found.
Please contact Pam Frey, district nurse at 643-5509 if you have any questions regarding head lice.

GUIDANCE NEWS
Counselor Connection
Throughout the school year, each grade level participates in lessons on personal safety (how to keep themselves safe) in many different situations. One situation we discuss briefly is abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and we would like to give caretakers some alternatives to lashing out at a child, so adults can stay above the line too. The following is a list of twelve alternatives from the National Child Abuse Prevention website:
Twelve Alternatives to Lashing Out at A Child
The next time everyday pressures build up to the point where you feel like lashing out -- STOP!
Try any of these simple alternatives. You'll feel better... and so will the child.
• Take a deep breath... and another. Then remember you are the adult
• Close your eyes and imagine you're hearing what your child is about to hear
• Press your lips together and count to 10... or better yet, to 20
• Put the child in a time-out chair (Rule: one minute for each year of age; i.e. 3 min. for 3 yrs old)
• Put yourself in a time-out chair (walk away) Think about why you are angry: is it the child, or is the child simply a convenient target for your anger?
• Phone a friend
• If someone can watch the child, go outside and take a walk
• Take a hot bath or splash cold water on your face
• Hug a pillow
• Turn on some music. Maybe even sing along
• Pick up a pencil and write down as many helpful words as you can think of
• Call for prevention information: 1-800-CHILDREN
If you think that a child you know might be being abused or neglected, please call your local human services department at (608)355-4200 and ask for a Child Welfare Access Worker. Together we can all help prevent child abuse and neglect.

Ponder Parenting
· For a short while, when your children are young, you may be able to coerce good behavior. But goodness of the heart can never be coerced. It can only be encouraged or discouraged. Consider your family’s rules, spoken and unspoken. Who made them? Who benefits from them, and how? Do they encourage or discourage your children? (Martin, William; The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: A New Interpretation, 1999)
E-mail Miss Sadie if you have thoughts or questions about how to accomplish this task.

ATTENDANCE
If you call your child in with an illness, we would like you to please let us know the symptom/symptoms, i.e., a fever, sore throat, headache, cough, etc., that your child may have.
MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
For example, if your child suffers from migraine headaches, we will NOT be able to distribute medication to him/her without an AMA on file. The AMA form can be found on the District web site. In order for medications to be distributed, pills must be in a prescription bottle with proper labeling. Students may carry inhalers with them, however, an AMA form must be on file in the office.
If you have any questions regarding medication distribution, please contact Pam Frey, RN for the district at 643-5509.
