EAGLE EXPRESS
MARCH 21, 2022
Eagle Academy encourages academic excellence by integrating proven instructional methods with a challenging curriculum and high expectations. This combination provides every child with the foundation needed to achieve proficiency of Eagle Academy’s performance standards at each instructional level.
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. This year, the State of Alaska Department of Education has partnered with NWEA to align the English language arts and mathematics tests with the MAP Growth benchmark assessments students take in fall, winter and spring. This balanced assessment system will target instruction and better support meeting students’ individual learning needs.
AK STAR (Alaska System of Academic Readiness) and the Alaska Science Assessment are administered to students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 5, 8 and 10 (science) each spring. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at his/her grade level. The assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed, but each content area takes approximately 150-180 minutes. Additionally, an English Learner student who has recently arrived to the country in grades 3-9, will not be taking the ELA portion of AK STAR.
Parents can locate resources for the new AK STAR test and the Alaska Science Assessment, including directions for Practice tests and Tutorials on the ASD website at https://www.asdk12.org/akstar.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.

WHERE ALONG THE TRAIL IS YOUR DOG?
Parents...Have you logged your child's reading minutes online yet?
Track the minutes your child reads and the minutes you read to your child. Each minute read is equal to one mile on the Iditarod Trail - a total of 975 this year. When the amount of minutes read reaches a main checkpoint, you can fill out the google form (link below) to submit their minutes. The form can be submitted multiple times for each checkpoint.
Here is the link for the google form to log minutes: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHvpsDIun1J_tBjTmCIMp34kyHlia-0ybNuSy-oY7rOmAZnA/viewform?usp=sf_link
If you have any questions, please contact Vanessa Hall at v.m.hall@outlook.com
We're hoping to see as many students as possible in Nome next week.
Check your SPAM Mail
Check your email. If you do not see a notification, check your junk or spam folders. Sometimes your webmail servers filter out notifications. Parents will have 48 hours to go into the online lottery system and accept a seat (if offered) or acknowledge their child's spot on the waitlist.
There are still several seats available for our inaugural 7th grade class. If you know of a 6th grader who: fits the Eagle Academy mold and is interested in a small school experience, please send them our way.
Now Available
Students are still encouraged to bring refillable water bottles from home. Having a water bottle on hand in the classroom is considerably more hygienic and it also cuts down on time spent traveling to and from the water fountain, which often results in missed instruction.

Eagle Academy values input from our families. You are an important partner as we work to continually improve our school environment. Each parent/guardian is asked to complete one survey. If you have more than one child attending this school, you only need to fill out one survey. All surveys are voluntary, anonymous, confidential, and do not ask questions about students’ families.
Survey for ASD Families: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/aasb/asdfamily
Results from this survey will be used to identify student, staff and family perceptions of school climate at Eagle Academy. The results from the survey will help to inform school administration's efforts to ensure that Eagle Academy is a safe, supportive, and caring place for all students and staff.
Thank you for your feedback and participation.
Sincerely,
Deanne Carroll ~ Principal

It's crunch time for the EACS Yearbook.
The theme this year is "Here Is Our Story." I want it to be representative of the story of our students, staff, and school.
Final call for pictures you might want to share that are due by Tuesday (tomorrow)! You can email them to jeeperjoebundy@yahoo.com or post them on our Facebook page. I will have a request for Yearbook photo post and you can just put them there- or FB message them to Jennifer DeKay Bundy.
I only have 7 responses from the whole school on the questionnaire and would love to have more! If your student is able to fill out the Google Form, that would be the easiest. If you are able to help them fill it out if they need it, that would be great too. If you need to print off a paper copy and have it filled out that way and send it in with them, that works too! I just want to get as many answers as I can!
You don't have to answer all the questions, but please answer as many that apply to you and you feel comfortable answering.
You can find the survey at: https://forms.gle/6q8HQoYAUb6qTCcbA
The Yearbook order deadline has been extended to this Friday, March 18! Last chance to preorder. Once the preorder deadline passes, then you will only be able to purchase on a first come, first served basis the last week of school. So preorder to make sure you are able to get your copy!

Volunteers needed!
PUSH BROOM PARTY: Want to get outside for some fresh air and maybe some exercise? We''ll be needing a group of parents to bring their push brooms and sweep the sand and gravel in the parking lot of Community Covenant Church a day or two before our Annual Field Day event. This is a great way to get those last few remaining hours of school service in before the end of the year. Date and time will be announced the first week in May.
If you would like to help, please contact Ms. Diana (dominguez_kutcher@asdk12.org) or Principal Carroll (carroll_deanne@asdk12.org) or your classroom teacher.
